Summary
This position is responsible for registration and insurance verification in all registration areas within MyMichigan Health. It handles financial arrangements for patients without insurance or with inadequate insurance. Primary functions include point-of-service collections of co-pay and deductible amounts at discharge, diplomatic and customer-focused interaction, and miscellaneous duties as assigned. For casual staff, responsibilities include providing admitting coverage in Midland, Clare, and Gratiot, picking up a minimum of 50% of requests, and registration/insurance verification for all patients presenting to registration.
Responsibilities
(40%) Collects co-pay amounts, posts payment in the system, prints receipts, balances cash at end of shift, and provides patients with pre-printed materials.
(20%) Meets with patient/family to explain insurance coverage, treatment costs, hospital billing policies, informs financial obligations upon discharge, and sets up payment plans.
(20%) Makes financial arrangements for patients without insurance or with inadequate coverage and communicates available financial assistance programs for self-pay patients.
(20%) Accesses insurance eligibility websites to verify benefits and coverage, assesses co-pay and deductible amounts, and documents the information.
Other Duties And Responsibilities
Perform inpatient admission functions, including direct admits and emergency department admissions.
Obtain signatures for admission consent, Medicare Important Message, review patient emergency contacts, clergy information, and notify house chaplain.
Collect patient demographics to complete accurate registration including documentation of MSP information for Medicare patients.
Verify patient identification using available tools.
Process Medical Outpatient, Invasive Radiology, OB checks, and Cardiac Catheterization registrations (all future-dated).
Carries special projects assigned by supervisor.

Certifications and Licensures N/A
Required Education High school diploma or GED required.
Experience, Training and Skills
One year experience working with insurance and patient accounts required.
Typing skills and basic personal computer knowledge needed to enter patient information.
Basic math proficiency and customer service skills.
Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups.
Maintains confidentiality with all patient information and data obtained.
Knowledge of medical terminology and medical office practices, policies and procedures preferred.
Four (4) years experience in a hospital setting with insurance, registration, and collections preferred.
CHAA certification preferred.
Proficiency in Microsoft Windows.

Exposure to stressful situations, including public contact, trauma, grief and death.
Able to wear personal protective equipment including latex materials or appropriate substitute.
Must be able to move freely in the facility with or without an assisted device and perform job functions as outlined.
Overall vision and hearing necessary with or without assisted device(s).
Frequently required to sit, stand, walk for long periods; may require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling, crouching.
Exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other potentially infectious material; must follow bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.
Ability to handle multiple tasks, work independently, regular attendance, and stay awake.
Overall dexterity required; may require repetition of movements on a regular to frequent basis.
Demand Level: Sedentary; occasionally (0-33%) lift or carry 0-10 lbs.
