General Sales Manager – Birmingham, AL Area
Family‑owned dealership group in the Birmingham area is seeking a strong, hands‑on General Sales Manager to lead variable operations. This is a great opportunity for an aggressive, high‑energy GSM who knows how to drive sales, train and motivate their team, and is strong on the desk. As the GSM, this person will be expected to be a hands‑on leader that keeps their team motivated and on track for continued success. Domestic dealership experience is a big plus, but not mandatory.
The successful candidate will have a proven track record as a GSM in a new car dealership and does business the right way to attract repeat business. Must be professional and a positive leader. The GSM will be expected to roll up their sleeves and work the desk, get involved with the sales floor, interact with customers on a daily basis, and do whatever else is needed to ensure the dealership functions smoothly and customers have a positive experience. It is important that the GSM hired is a positive mentor to the team and leads by example, coaching, mentoring, and having constructive 1:1s with employees. Moreover, it is important that this person is honest, trustworthy, and looking for a long‑term opportunity with a dealer group where they can continue to grow and be part of something. Experience working with subprime customers is a plus.
Responsibilities
As the General Sales Manager, you will be responsible for managing the day‑to‑day operations of the dealership’s sales team.
Lead and manage the sales team, providing guidance, training, and support to achieve sales goals.
Manage the sales process and incoming leads, including appointments, negotiations, and closing sales.
Ensuring proper follow up of all prospective buyers by developing, implementing, and monitoring a CRM system.
Actively work to close deals and work the desk.
Conducting daily and weekly sales and sales training meetings.
Lead and manage the F&I Department.
Coach sales team on proper closing techniques through training and active participation.
Maintain positive relationships with all customers, internal staff, and external vendors.
Hire, motivate, and monitor the performance of all new/used vehicle sales employees.
Monitor and analyze sales performance metrics to identify areas for improvement and growth.
Foster a positive and high‑performing sales culture by setting targets, motivating the team, and resolving conflicts.
Ensure compliance with all relevant laws and regulations governing automotive sales.
Stay up‑to‑date with industry trends, market conditions, and competitors.
Communicate with Dealer Principal on pressing issues, strategy, and overall well‑being of the dealership.
Qualifications
Proven experience as an Automotive General Sales Manager or automotive experience in a new car dealership.
Strong understanding of automotive sales principles, strategies, and customer service.
Exceptional leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Ability to manage the BDC department and lead management.
Ability to manage the Finance department.
Ability to motivate and inspire a sales team to achieve and exceed targets.
Proficiency in using CRM and sales management software.
In‑depth knowledge of current automotive market trends and competition.
Excellent negotiation and problem‑solving abilities.
Valid driver’s license and a good driving record.
Compensation
Competitive compensation package will be in the $145,000 - $160,000+ range based on the successful candidate’s experience, track record, and performance.
