Salary Range 90k – 110k $
Description of the assignment The Survey Party Chief
is the leader of a two‑man crew (field surveyor and rodman) that jointly performs field layouts and as‑built surveys for construction purposes.
Establishes and monitors construction layout for both temporary and permanent work elements.
Maintains and replaces the survey control network within the accuracy as per VDOT’s survey manual.
Utilizes survey equipment, software, and survey systems in performing and managing project surveying for the construction of the project.
Responsible for keeping and maintaining the surveying equipment assigned to the crew, including regular verifications.
Performs as-built surveys for the different disciplines.
Profile Required Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent (associate degree or technical certificate in surveying or related field preferred).
Basic understanding of surveying techniques, instruments, and terminology.
Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and terrain types.
Strong attention to detail and accuracy in data collection and documentation.
Excellent communication and teamwork skills. A willingness to learn and develop technical skills under the guidance of senior surveyors.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Ability to communicate with a vast range of support entities including Engineers, Superintendents, and Architects.
Possess strong problem-solving abilities to address and solve survey challenges associated with construction operations.
Ability to learn quickly how to use and operate new survey equipment.
Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications and translate into survey data for layout in the field.
Good attention to detail with the ability to recognize discrepancies.
Ability to learn how to use Civil 3D and Trimble Business Center (demonstrable experience with the software is a plus). Ability to learn Microsoft Word and Excel.
