MEVO

MEVO (the Mahwah Environmental Volunteers Organization, Inc.) is a youth‑led environmental non‑profit dedicated to creating scalable ecological solutions that inspire and empower people to take action for a better future. Since our founding in 2008, we mobilized more than 12,000 volunteers, providing over 70,000 hours of hands‑on environmental service in northern New Jersey and lower New York. A core focus of our work is Stag Hill in Mahwah, home of the Ramapough Lenape Nation, where we removed more than 850,000 pounds of illegally dumped trash over 200+ cleanups. We also build, maintain, and repair local trails in partnership with the New York‑New Jersey Trail Conference. Our central program, Fresh Roots Farming, showcases organic vegetable production in multiple gardens and farms, offering internships, volunteer days, and community programming.

About Our Fresh Roots Farming Program MEVO has grown, built, managed, and curated community farms since 2011. We started with milk‑crate gardens and built two organically‑tended market gardens between 2015‑2020. We believe teaching environmentally friendly farming practices and engaging people in direct work is the best way to connect the community to environmental issues. MEVO currently tends a two‑acre market garden and will secure a second garden in 2026 after the loss of Lovewell Farm.

Who We’re Looking For A strong leader passionate about community engagement, food and farming, and environmental issues. They should have a sense of responsibility, teamwork, and an understanding that farming involves caring for living systems. This role is ideal for someone eager to develop professional skills and advance MEVO’s mission of scalable ecological solutions.

Job Purpose The Farm Manager‑in‑Training will spend the 2026 season learning from our current Farm Manager and will take over all growing and programming of MEVO’s Fresh Roots Farm Program for 2027. They will support the Farm Manager in all areas of growing, production, volunteer programming, and farm maintenance for the Fresh Roots Farm and any additional farm projects in 2026. They will also lead volunteer events, work with interns, and serve as the crew leader for MEVO’s internship programs.
