The Digital Journalist (DJ) will cover state and national politics, providing reporting and research across ABC News platforms, including television, digital, and radio. The DJ will be expected to assist in covering political news events and understand complex, evolving storylines, and be able to turn editorial notes quickly and efficiently. This is an off‑air position.
Responsibilities
Original writing and reporting, including developing and maintaining sources
Generating enterprise story ideas, with an emphasis on exclusive reporting that funnels up to various ABC News platforms
Reporting and publishing daily news stories for ABCNews.com
Conducting and coordinating research ahead of large‑scale political events
Working with the Political Unit on coverage of major political events
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum of two years journalism experience and covering political news
Experience in original writing and reporting in a breaking‑news setting
Sound news judgment and ability to find primary sources to produce daily story assignments, breaking news coverage and long‑term futures reporting
Must be able to balance priorities, multiple projects, and tasks
Must be an effective communicator
Must be a self‑starter, able to work independently and collaborate with other members of the Political Unit
Must be well organized and capable of coping with changing priorities and work requirements
Preferred Qualifications
Demonstrated sourcing strength in state/national politics, including a history of cultivating relationships with campaigns, operatives, elected officials, and political groups.
Experience breaking news that has driven coverage at the state or national level
Strong understanding of polling, public opinion data, and election analytics
The hiring range for this position in Washington, DC is $79,400 - 106,400 per year. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job‑related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A bonus and/or long‑term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
