Overview The City of Norfolk Department of Parks & Recreation is seeking a Recreational Specialist to assist in planning, implementing and evaluating recreational programs and daily activities of the center. The Recreation Specialist assists in managing the operations of the center and provides assistance to employees; evaluates recreational programs and daily activities of the center; and interacts with children, adults and seniors. The Recreation Specialist will participate in activities in addition to providing informational materials, directing volunteers and employees, and contributing to the cultural growth of individuals.

Department Starting Hiring Salary: $51,610.42

Responsibilities

Assists in planning, implementing, and evaluating recreational programs and daily activities of the center.

Serves on committees for the planning and marketing of events.

Assists in managing facility operations and aids employees. Interacts with children, teens, adults, and seniors.

Participates in activities in addition to providing informational materials, directing volunteers and part-time employees as well as contributes to the cultural growth of individuals.

Assists with the management of daily operations of the facility by scheduling and monitoring volunteers and part-time employees, compiling figures and preparing reports, providing lesson plans and program planning, authorizing permits, and collecting fees for programs and rental of the facility.

Interacts with citizens by responding to inquiries, and contributing to the growth and development of youth, teens, adults, seniors, and volunteers.

Markets the recreation program by distributing flyers and announcements to the community and submitting press releases.

Serves on committees for the planning and marketing of events.

Performs related duties by carrying out administrative responsibilities, transporting patrons, submits and writes initiatives and provides input on purchases

Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature which may be obtained with six months/one year of advanced study or training past the high school equivalency. Junior college, vocational, business, technical or correspondence schools are likely sources. Appropriate certification may be awarded upon satisfactory completion of advanced study or training.

Six months experience.

Preferred Education/Experience

Associate's degree in Recreation and Tourism, Physical Education, or any closely related field.

At least one (1) year of experience in recreation and leisure activities.

At least one (1) year of experience working with youth, teens, adults, or seniors

Preferred License(s) and/or Certifications

Valid Driver’s License

Frist Aid, CPR certified

Work Hours Monday to Sunday; 6:00 a.m. - 12:00 a.m.; not to exceed 40 hours per week; flexible hours will apply including weekends, holidays, and special events.
