Construction Inspector – Virginia Beach Public Works

The City of Virginia Beach Public Works - Engineering and Construction Management Services Division is currently hiring for the position of Construction Inspector. This position will be filled as a
Construction Inspector II
($47,803.80) or
Construction Inspector III
($52,703.70). Salary is negotiable within 20% of the listed starting salary and depends on qualifications and experience of the selected applicant.
Duties and Responsibilities
Coordinate civil construction activities, perform inspection duties, make minor field engineering decisions, and process record and financial data associated with construction of highway and drainage facilities and other civil horizontal infrastructure to ensure compliance with city and state standards and contractual documents.
Conduct various inspections and tests to ensure proper construction of roadway pavements, curbs and gutters, sidewalks, drainage systems, including pipelines, structures, stormwater management facilities and erosion and sediment control controls.
Approve requests for payments after confirming actual work performed.
Review and recommend time extension requests; assist in negotiation and prepare drafts of work orders and change orders.
Keep detailed records of type of work performed, daily measurements of work quantities completed, and project personnel and equipment on site.
May provide training to other inspectors; may be required to consult with and advise inspectors to resolve problems in a team leader capacity; and may act in a supervisor’s absence.
Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less, as determined by the supervisor based on current workloads and department needs.

Minimum Requirements Construction Inspector II minimum requirements :
High School or GED, plus five years progressive experience in fields providing the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Must have, or obtain, a current and valid Virginia or North Carolina driver’s license in accordance with Virginia or North Carolina DMV driver’s license eligibility requirements.
Must be able to obtain VDOT Materials Inspector Certifications and VA-DEQ E&S/SWM Inspector Certifications.
Construction Inspector III minimum requirements :
High School or GED plus eight years progressive experience in fields providing the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Must have, or obtain, a current and valid Virginia or North Carolina driver’s license in accordance with Virginia or North Carolina DMV driver’s license eligibility requirements.
Must possess current VDOT Materials Inspector Certifications and VA DEQ E&S/SWM Inspector Certifications.
Special Requirements
All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short‑term department needs and/or City‑wide emergencies.
Preferred Qualifications
Civil construction experience related to all phases of roadway construction, bridges, stormwater conveyance systems, site erosion controls and other horizontal civil infrastructure construction.
Experience with civil construction documentation such as completing daily work reports, measuring completed work and filing various inspection reports.
VDEQ Erosion & Sediment and Stormwater Management Inspector Certifications.
VDOT Material Inspector Certifications for Soils and Aggregate Compaction, Asphalt Field Level I & II, Pavement Marking, ACI Concrete Field and VDOT Intermittent Work Zone Safety Certification.
Experience with municipal government civil construction project inspection.
Construction Environmental Compliance Inspection experience.
Experience with pay applications and quantities approval.
Experience with reviewing construction plans and specifications.
