Uses transcription software to transcribe supplemental reports from recorded audio, live dictation, interviews, and meetings conducted in-person or over the telephone. Corrects grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors in transcribed reports. Assembles homicide case books in preparation for court proceedings using appropriate forms and format styles in compliance with established procedures. Performs clerical duties such as photocopying, filing, scanning, assembling and organizing case books, and maintaining files, and records. Requirements to Qualify
No experience is required. Experience in the operation of a transcribing machine is desirable. Typing Skill: Ability to type at the rate of 40 net words per minute (wpm). License: A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to use an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential duties. Physical Class: Physical Class II- Light: This class includes administrative and clerical positions requiring light physical effort that may include occasional light lifting to a 10-pound limit and some bending, stooping, or squatting. Considerable ambulation may be involved. Desirable Qualifications: Credit will be given to applicants who possess the following desirable qualifications and indicate so on their employment application at the time of filing. Experience using Start-Stop Transcription Software. Experience typing dictated crime-related investigative reports. Supplemental Questionnaire
As part of this application process, applicants will be required to complete a supplemental questionnaire. The questionnaire contains a pre-investigative questionnaire which will be used as part of the background investigation process to ensure applicants meet the standards set forth by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Applicants who fail the pre-investigative questionnaire will be disqualified and will have to wait three (3) months from the date of the disqualification in order to reapply. Examination Content
This examination will consist of three (3) parts: Part I: A computerized multiple-choice test weighted 40% assessing: Attention to Detail, Computer Skills, Multitasking/Time Management, Verbal Communication. Part II: A qualifying online typing assessment of 40 net words per minute (wpm) will be required for candidates who have not held a typing position in the service of the County of Los Angeles. Applicants do not need to appear at a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department exam facility to participate in this assessment. Applicants may complete the online assessment on a personal device during a specified examination period. Applicants who do not pass their online typing assessment will not be allowed an additional opportunity. Applicants who fail to complete the online typing assessment will be automatically disqualified from participation in this examination. Part III: An evaluation of training and experience based on application information and desirable qualifications weighted 60%. Applicants achieving a passing score of 70% or higher on each weighted part of the examination will be added to the eligible register. Testing Accommodation: If you require an accommodation to fairly complete any part of the assessment process, you will be required to submit documentation from a qualified medical provider or other qualified professional to support your request for a testing accommodation. Eligibility and Vacancy Information: The names of applicants receiving a passing grade in the examination will be placed on the eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of six (6) months from the date of promulgation. Applications will be processed on an as-received basis and promulgated to the eligible register accordingly. The list of successful applicants created from this exam will be used to fill vacancies within the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, Detective Division, Homicide Bureau. No person may compete in this examination more than once every six (6) months. Special Information: Successful applicants must complete a thorough background investigation, including fingerprint search. Examples of disqualifying factors include: any felony convictions; job related misdemeanor convictions; certain serious traffic convictions or patterns of traffic violations (3 moving violations in one year; failure to appear; at fault accidents; suspended license; driving under the influence); poor credit history; poor employment history; substance abuse; anyone on probation.
