Survey CAD Technician II

Position Overview The Survey Technician II partners with the Professional Land Surveyor on a diverse range of responsibilities to ensure successful execution of land survey projects. The role requires the preparation of comprehensive survey documents, including detailed maps, plats, and precise boundary descriptions, using industry-standard software such as AutoCAD, Carlson Survey, and Civil 3D, alongside Microsoft Office Suite. The technician maintains meticulous records of survey data and field notes, ensuring project documentation is organized and accessible. They also assist with the preparation of daily field packages and manage field work schedules to optimize team efficiency and work closely with the manager when completing assigned tasks.
Key Responsibilities
Prepare a variety of survey documents per applicable state and local municipality standards (e.g., ALTA/NSPS Land Title Survey, Existing Conditions, topographic, plats, etc.) and obtain basic information from maps upon request.
Independently write legal descriptions for survey documents.
Perform land records research and have knowledge of different governmental offices and the records they maintain.
Compile deeds and plats into a deed sketch.
Assist with staking computations; possess a general knowledge of construction staking principles and stake markings.
Assist in preparation of field crew packages and point maps.
Escalate potential hazards and unsafe working conditions.
Maintain good client relations to foster long‑term relationships.
Represent McAdams in the field with professional image through proper conduct and presentable appearance.
Follow guidelines and company standards set forth by the Geomatics department.
Help maintain a safe and respectful work environment by following company policies and procedures.
Skills + Experience
High School Diploma or GED.
BS or associate’s degree with emphasis on Surveying, Geomatics or Computer Aided Drafting and/or certification as NSPS CST Level II preferred.
2–5 years of work experience in surveying.
General knowledge of geometry, coordinate geometry, trigonometry and basic land survey fundamentals and computations.
Strong technical knowledge of AutoCAD, Carlson Survey and Civil 3D software, and Microsoft Office.
Ability to generate a surface model from survey data sets and understand principles of interpolating elevations.
Ability to read and interpret DOT Right‑of‑Way plans, site plans, grading plans, utility plans and profiles, horizontal and vertical curves, foundation plans, and architectural plans.
Ability to take direction and execute with accuracy and thoroughness.
Strong communication and teamwork skills.
Valid driver’s license.
Successful completion of motor vehicle records check, drug test, and functional assessment.
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with managers and peers.
Work Environment & Physical Demands
Work primarily outdoors under varying environmental conditions.
Long‑term standing and frequent walking; common hazards on project sites.
Repetitive finger movements (picking, pinching, typing, grappling).
Carry, lift and push/pull up to 50 pounds frequently and up to 100 pounds occasionally.
Stand or walk between 8–12 hours per day.
Weekend, overtime, overnight work and travel may be required.
Additional physical duties may be required as necessary.
