Our flagship programs, Academy for Urban Scholars High School, NCUS TEC, the African American Male Wellness Agency, and the Africentric Personal Development Shop, empower individuals and families across the country.

Position Overview We are seeking Freelance Writers to develop high-quality, mission-driven content that amplifies NCUS’s impact across its core pillars: Advocacy & Policy, Financial Literacy, Health & Wellness, Education, and Workforce Development. These writers will craft compelling narratives, human-interest features, reports, thought-leadership articles, and digital content that highlight NCUS’s transformative impact in urban communities nationwide. The writers will collaborate with the Director of Communications and Public Relations to publish stories across NCUS platforms and pitch selected pieces to local, trade, and national media to elevate the company as a thought leader in equity-focused community transformation. The ideal candidates are strong storytellers with a journalistic mindset, able to translate complex topics into accessible and engaging content that inspires action, attracts donors and partners, and strengthens NCUS’s brand reputation.

Key Responsibilities

Develop compelling, human-centered stories that showcase NCUS’s impact across workforce development, health equity, education, financial empowerment, and socioeconomics.

Create policy-centered storytelling, issue briefs, and advocacy articles that translate complex policy topics into accessible narratives aligned with NCUS’s mission.

Craft stories that highlight health disparities, community wellness efforts, prevention initiatives, and the impact of NCUS’s health programming.

Capture the impact of NCUS’s workforce and education pathways, including certifications, partnerships, credentialing, and career placements.

Write engaging content that supports financial literacy and wealth-building.

Collaborate with the Director of Communications and Public Relations to pitch stories to gain media coverage.

Monitor emerging issues, including public policy developments, economic shifts, health news, and socioeconomic topics, to write timely and relevant stories.

Proactively identify awareness months, national observances, and trend opportunities to propose high-impact stories that elevate NCUS’s visibility.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, english, or a related field.

Minimum two years of experience in nonprofit, corporate, or mission-driven communications.

Experience writing in AP style.

Media relations expertise, including pitching stories, cultivating journalist relationships, and securing earned media coverage.

Exceptional writing and editing skills with a strong narrative voice.

Preferred Skills

Proven ability to translate complex ideas into accessible.

Experience in a newsroom.

Relationships with journalist, reporters, and industry analyst.

Deep commitment to equity, nonprofits, and community empowerment.
