Job Overview
Scholastic Press seeks an editorial assistant to join the team. The position provides an opportunity to immerse yourself in the world of children’s books by supporting two executive editors on robust lists of middle grade and young adult fiction, nonfiction, and graphic novels, in addition to managing departmental duties. A passion for children’s books is a must.
Location New York City (SoHo office). Minimum two days per week in the office. Additional in‑office attendance may be required depending on essential functions.
Responsibilities
Provide clerical and editorial support for managers, including metadata/systems input, preparing materials for meetings, ordering books, and mailing.
Daily project support and act as point person for inquiries from other departments (legal, sales, production, design, marketing).
Assist with administrative work related to a global franchise and other Scholastic Trade/school market revenue‑driving authors and properties.
Read and evaluate agent submissions for managers and, once trained, review book passes and proofs. Draft cover copy and fact sheets. May perform second reads on manuscripts or submissions for manager.
Provide departmental support with scheduling, meeting organization, and coordination of departmental initiatives.
Qualifications
Entry‑level position, approx. 80% administrative, 20% editorial/creative.
Highly organized with ability to juggle multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
Excellent writing skills, problem‑solving, strong organization and time management.
Strong communication skills in all forms (in person, phone, video, email).
Genuine passion for middle‑grade and young adult books; enjoys reading broadly.
Detail oriented, self‑starter, comfortable asking for help, able to work independently and collaboratively.
Hybrid position with in‑office responsibilities; minimum two days per week in New York office.
