Product Designer at Ashby
Hi!
I'm Chris, head of Product Design at Ashby. We’re looking for a versatile, intrinsically motivated designer who is excited to contribute to rethinking how modern software is designed. At Ashby, you’ll be part designer, part product manager, part consultant, and part design system manager (or a combination of the four). Ashby is growing >100% YoY and has notable customers like Notion, Linear, Shopify, and Snowflake. We have tens of millions in ARR, very low churn, and years of runway.
How We Work
Product teams at Ashby consist of a product manager, a designer, and ~4–5 engineers. The product manager briefs the designer, the designer creates designs, and engineers implement. We take a principled approach: design is needed on varying degrees of each project. Sometimes the design needed is simply reusing existing components; other times you own the product from start to finish. This principled approach enables Ashby to outperform incumbents in multiple verticals.
What We’re Building
Talent teams need a hiring process that identifies great candidates, moves them quickly, and provides a great candidate experience. Ashby provides intelligent software that provides insights into where they’re failing and automates or simplifies many tasks that recruiters perform daily.
Responsibilities
Consult engineers on layout, typography, flows, and interactions. Turn customer feedback into a usability backlog and propose projects for engineers. Take ownership of large product features and think through JTBD, navigation, IA, layout, and interaction. Consolidate and refine our design system to be functional, aesthetic, and best‑in‑class.
Qualifications
4+ years of product design experience in desktop SaaS. Think from first principles instead of standard UX processes. Break down complex problems by asking narrowing questions. Intuition solves many usability problems without heavy data or research. Curious & resourceful, creative solutions and de‑risking. Strong skills in layout, navigation, IA, UI, and interaction design. Strong visual design skills, obsession with craft & details. Bonus: early‑stage startup experience or solo designer role.
Preferred Experience (Why you may want to apply)
Creating leverage and impact far above a typical EPD product team structure. Working on all parts of a massive product surface area. Reinventing the design model for modern enterprise software. Covering all parts of the design process with focus on design craft. Helping build our design system from the ground up.
When You Might Not Want to Apply
Design independently without much guidance from a PM or design management. Will be challenged constantly by engineering & product. Prefer an in‑person role over remote (Ashby operates remotely). Dislike written documentation. Want a set structure and rhythm to your projects.
Interview Process
30‑minute introduction call. 45‑minute portfolio review. 135‑minute design exercise, portfolio deep dive, and meet the CEO (live whiteboarding). 90‑minute meet the team and app teardown.
Benefits
Competitive salary and equity. 10‑year exercise window for stock options. Unlimited PTO with four weeks recommended per year. Twelve weeks fully paid family leave in the US. Generous equipment, software, and office furniture budget. $100/month education budget. Top‑notch health insurance for US employees and dependents (premiums covered).
Equal Opportunity Employment
Ashby provides equal employment opportunities (EEO) to all employees and applicants for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, genetics, sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. We are committed to a diverse and inclusive workforce and welcome people from all backgrounds, experiences, perspectives, and abilities.
