General Summary of Position
MedStar Health is looking for a Recreation Therapist to join our team at MedStar National Rehabilitation Hospital. As a Recreation Therapist, you will be responsible for patient care and related activities for all referred patients within departmental and professional practice standards. You will serve as a clinical resource in Therapeutic Recreation and aquatic therapy interventions and participate in program planning and development for Therapeutic Recreation. Provides effective and efficient, evidence-based care. Delivers individualized patient care in Recreation Therapy in accordance with accreditation guidelines, professional code of ethics, and standards of practice, including evaluation/re-evaluation, treatment planning, patient/caregiver education, and discharge planning.
Demonstrates sound clinical reasoning during patient care to maximize safe and effective outcomes. Demonstrates leadership by coaching/managing quality sports programming in community programs, including safety, budgeting, equipment maintenance, appropriate paperwork, volunteers, and serving as liaison to national organizations and partners. Participates actively in fundraising and grant writing to fund sports and fitness programs.
Follows MNRH documentation policy to maintain accurate and timely documentation including assessment, clinical interventions, flowsheets, and discharge recommendations. Documentation reflects the need for acute rehab level of care and includes patient/family education, training, treatment intensity, and duration.
Demonstrates effective time management and meets productivity expectations. Maintains accurate schedules for assigned patients and professional activities.
Coordinates sports programming. Ensures necessary supplies and equipment are available for patient care and for community sports programming. Is timely, punctual, and prepared.
Qualifications
Graduate of an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree or higher in Therapeutic Recreation or Recreation and Leisure Studies with a Therapeutic option/emphasis.
Advanced training in clinical expertise through workshop attendance.
Minimum of 12-week Therapeutic Recreation Internship in a clinical setting, preferably in physical rehabilitation.
Therapeutic Recreation Specialist by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC).
Local driver’s license and maintenance of a safe driving record.
Current BLS (Basic Life Support) Certification.
Member in good standing of professional, discipline-specific organization.
2 years of clinical experience in a rehabilitation setting.
Red Cross Certified Water Safety Instructor preferred.
