In this role, you will organize, lead, and promote interest in various cosmetology. The instructor will serve as a model and a source of inspiration for students and aspiring cosmetologists. Cosmetology specialists are responsible for sequential lesson planning based on the New York Edge curriculum, classroom preparation for cosmetology teaching and holding students to established standards, and adapting the New York State Arts Learning Standards to create an engaging and rewarding activity that encourages participation in New York Edge programs./ppEssential Job Functions:/pulliEstablish and enforce rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining order among the students for whom they are responsible./liliOrganize, lead, and promote interest in arts activities such as cosmetology./liliOrganize performance groups and direct their rehearsals./liliEstablish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects, and communicate those objectives to students./liliAscertain and interpret group interests, evaluate equipment and facilities, and adapt activities to meet the students needs./liliPrepare materials and classrooms for class activities./liliExplain principles, techniques, and safety procedures to participants in the activities and demonstrate the use of materials and equipment./liliEvaluate activities to determine if they are producing desired results./liliAdapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students needs and interests./liliProgressive development of student skills leading to a final project./li/ulpRequired Skills:/pulliMust be knowledgeable and skilled in a variety of cosmetology./liliPrior experience teaching and instructing youth preferred./liliMust be able to follow a curriculum./liliMust be responsible, reliable, and punctual!/liliExcellent communication and interpersonal skills are required./liliInstructs, manages, and supervises students in the classroom and the beauty space./liliTeaches a variety of courses in nail technology, hair styling, and other beautifying arts while lecturing on the theory, techniques, and terminology used in the cosmetology profession./liliOrganizes a program of practical and technical instruction, including demonstrations of skills used by hairstylists, manicurists, make-up artists, and other workers in the beauty industry./liliPrepares outline of instructional lesson plan and assembles materials to be presented./liliEvaluates the students understanding of the learning objectives via careful performance and execution of the hands-on activities./liliMaintains desirable classroom conditions and a student-oriented approach./liliMay be required to walk up and down stairs./liliMay have to lift or move objects/materials as needed./liliWork is performed mostly within a New York City Public School but may be required to interact with the community at-large during trips or events./liliOther duties as assigned./li/ulpQualifications:/pulliHigh School Diploma or Equivalent required; some college preferred./liliA minimum of one year of work-related skill, knowledge, or experience is required./liliA minimum of one year of teaching experience is required./liliMust have passion for New York Edges mission and demonstrated interest in education and youth development./liliCandidates qualified to lead instruction in more than one activity are also preferred./li/ulpWork Schedule:/pulli9-15 hours per week./liliMonday through Friday -- 2:30 pm - 5:30 pm./li/ulpThe Cosmetology Specialist must report to the school building and interact with staff, students, parents, and school administration.
