PUBLIC DEFENDER
– The Franklin County Personnel Department is accepting applications for a Public Defender within the Franklin County Public Defender’s Department. The Public Defender will oversee professional, investigative, and clerical staff in a busy office that provides criminal defense services to those unable to afford counsel, as well as representation in Family Court matters requiring assigned counsel. Duties include filing motions, performing legal research, amending petitions, conducting hearings and trials, and appearing in various courts to handle felony cases, Family Court matters, misdemeanor cases in local criminal courts, and after-hours arraignments. Applicants should have strong communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills, and be able to manage multiple responsibilities. A commitment to serving low-income and underserved populations is required; an interest in rural communities and their unique issues is a plus.
Minimum qualifications
include being licensed to practice in New York State and admitted to the NYS Bar. A valid driver’s license is required at the time of application and must be maintained throughout employment. Applicants
must
submit a
cover letter and resume, Civil Service Application, copy of driver’s license, and proof of admission to the NYS Bar .
