Heavy Motor Equipment Operator - DPW

Skilled operation of heavy motor equipment as assigned requiring considerable manipulative skill. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the foremen and working foreman, or general supervision, including receiving direction, by the Superintendent, the appointing authority, or his designee. Performed in accordance with all rules and regulations of Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Department of Transportation as well City ordinances and rules, including Departments. Duties can and will include routine manual laboring tasks requiring considerable strength and endurance. Operates all refuse/recycle vehicles, dump trucks, stump grinders, sweepers, snow plows of medium capacity, truck mounted snow blowers, power brooms, jet machines, catch basin vacuums, chippers, and any other equipment determined by the appointing authority of similar type and nature. Must load and unload assigned vehicle(s) with any and all types of material required and relating to the task at hand. Some examples of which are refuse/recycling, brush, leaves, snow, dirt, and black top. May also be assigned to spread asphalt, dig trenches, erect signs, lay pipe, operate chain saws, shovel snow, rake leaves, spread loam, trim brush, mow lawns, repair signs and perform any task charged to the Department in its daily activity. Must be able to service, which is required, equipment with fuel, oil or coolants, make minor adjustments and repairs; maintain power tools. Clean the inside and outside of an assigned vehicle is mandatory. Performs related work as required and/or assigned. Valid CDL License, Class B or higher, HEML or equivalent hoisting license or the ability to obtain necessary licenses within six months of hire. Must be able to pass a drug and alcohol test and a physical exam is required. No less than one year prior experience of driving experience. Considerable knowledge of hazards and safety precautions in the performance of this job and in proficiently operating tools and equipment associated with this operation. Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to tools and equipment operated. Working knowledge of the geography of the city is desirable. Ability to follow and/or to give instructions and carry them out when furnished in written, oral, or diagram form and of a technical nature. Must possess the ability to deal with public of the City of Westfield in a professional manner in order to resolve problems or answer questions regarding work performed. Ability to work as part of a crew and/or to work independently with minimal supervision as required. Ability to prepare and complete reports accurately, including being required to daily complete driver sheets and submit them to mechanic on a daily basis. Ability to work safely, follow and practice safe work practices and city and state regulations and ordinances. Must possess a working knowledge of traffic laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the rules and regulations of the Department of Transportation. Must possess the ability to understand and apply the City of Westfields Ordinances, rules and regulations as related to this position.
