The Transcriber will support the Department of Justice (DOJ) with translation, interpretation, transcription, and other linguistic support services (LSS). Activities include translating written or electronic documents, video and audio media content (e.g., CDs, .wav files), and providing ancillary services such as court and deposition interpretation. Source material encompasses legal, business, public administrative, medical, scientific, financial, historical, geographical, and military terminology, including technology and cyber?related terms. All material is deemed sensitive and requires strict confidentiality controls. Job Description
Materials provided by the DOJ will be in formats such as electronic or hard copies of books, journal articles, reports, manuscripts, letters, legal documents, memoranda, multimedia presentations, spreadsheets, email correspondence, SMS and MMS messages, audio or video files. The subject matter ranges from highly technical and specialized information to informal street language. The transcriber must accurately capture the original meaning, tone, and register without omissions or additions, abiding by the code of linguist ethics. Required Qualifications Minimum of three (3) years of experience in language transcription. Qualifying scores ILR 3 minimum or equivalent in listening, comprehension, and writing on language/translation tests. Must have lived 3 of the last 5 years in the U.S. (does not have to be consecutive). Must have at least 1 year of experience working with a law enforcement and/or legal department. U.S. citizenship, naturalized citizenship, or Green Card holder with a Social Security Number. Knowledge of both English and the target foreign language vocabularies used in formal, legal, diplomatic, consultative, and casual modes of communication, including colloquial and regional slang. Knowledge of specialized terminology in both languages related to government functions. Fluent writing in English and the foreign language, including colloquial slang without altering meaning. Accuracy in translation without changes, omissions, or additions. Preservation of the source tone and register. Adherence to relevant code of linguist ethics.
