Volunteer (Unpaid) About Mentor A Promise Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a New York City–based nonprofit dedicated to supporting children and youth ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability. Through mentorship, literacy development, social-emotional learning, creative expression, and storytelling, MAP creates safe, consistent, and empowering spaces where young people are seen, respected, and valued. MAP is committed to storytelling that is ethical, inclusive, and grounded in lived experience. Sensitivity and cultural review are essential to ensuring that our work honors the communities we serve. Purpose of the Role The

Sensitivity & Cultural Review Editor

supports MAP’s commitment to respectful, accurate, and culturally responsive storytelling. This role reviews content for representation, language, framing, and potential harm—helping ensure stories reflect dignity, nuance, and care. This editor does not rewrite stories, but provides thoughtful guidance and feedback to strengthen authenticity, reduce bias, and support inclusive narratives across MAP’s publishing, curriculum, and media work. Key Responsibilities Review stories, scripts, curriculum, and communications for cultural sensitivity and representation Identify language, framing, or content that may unintentionally cause harm or reinforce stereotypes Provide clear, respectful, and actionable feedback to writers and editors Support trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and equity-centered storytelling practices Collaborate with narrative editors, age-band editors, and program staff Offer guidance grounded in lived experience, research, or community-informed perspectives Flag concerns related to identity, culture, race, ethnicity, religion, ability, family structure, or lived experience Participate in review cycles and feedback discussions as needed Maintain confidentiality and professional discretion Check and respond to emails daily, with responses within 48 hours Qualifications Lived experience and/or professional background relevant to cultural review and representation Experience in sensitivity reading, cultural consulting, editing, education, or community work Strong ability to provide constructive, non-punitive feedback Understanding of trauma-informed and culturally responsive frameworks Excellent written communication and judgment Commitment to ethical, inclusive, and mission-driven storytelling Bonus (Not Required) Experience reviewing children’s or youth-focused content Familiarity with SEL-informed or educational materials Background in publishing, curriculum, or media review Bilingual or multilingual abilities (Spanish or Haitian Creole preferred) Commitment Volunteer role, approximately

5–10 hours per week Minimum 6-month commitment
