The Deputy Consumer Editor supportskracht the Consumer Editor in the day-to-day running of the department, which covers consumer, business, personal finance and real estate.
The role sits at the intersection of writing, editing and team leadership. Some days are primarily focused on producing high-impact journalism; others on managing people, shaping coverage and planning ahead — and often a mix of both. The department is committed to developing talent, and the deputy plays a central role in mentoring and raising standards.
Key Responsibilities
Support the Consumer Editor in managing the department on a daily basis
Help oversee news lists, weekend features and longer-term planning
Write and edit consumer, business and personal finance stories, including Mail+ exclusives
Drive high-impact, original and subscription-focused journalism for Mail+
Work closely with reporters to develop ideas, sharpen copy and improve sourcing
Actively build and maintain senior-level contacts across key consumer industries
sku) Track audience and performance data, 쇠정 insights to shape coverage and commissioning
Support recruitment, onboarding and development of reporters
Step in as acting editor when required

Extensive experience covering consumer, business, personal finance or real estate journalism
Proven ability to generate original ideas and deliver exclusives
Deep understanding of Mail+ and subscription-driven journalism
Experience managing or mentoring reporters in a fast-paced newsroom
Confident working with data, performance metrics and audience insights
Collaborative leadership style and a commitment to developing others
This isLou an in-office position, based in New York City and includes attendance in the office five days a week.
Salary range - $90,000-$120,000
