About the Role
Chronicle Books is looking for a creative and savvy Associate Editor to join the Art & Entertainment publishing group. From Grumpy Cat to Dolly Parton, the Art & Entertainment team acquires and publishes art and pop culture books, gift formats, and calendars across a wide range of non‑fiction categories.
Key Responsibilities
- Acquire approximately eight books and four to six gift formats and calendars a year.
- Build a distinctive, innovative, and profitable list by generating ideas, conducting consumer research, and adding value whenever possible.
- Focus on categories such as humor, photography, music, creativity/inspiration, brand‑ and trend‑driven, pets, and licensing.
- Project‑manage and edit ongoing and established book and gift series, aiming to acquire two breakout or lead titles per year.
- Maintain and grow relationships with agents, authors, licensors, packagers, overseas publishers, and other publishing professionals.
- Evaluate and present proposals, generate P&Ls, tipsheets, and copy, make offers, and monitor marketplace trends.
- Guide titles through the publishing process alongside the Art & Entertainment group members to exceed goals.
Compensation
Hiring salary range: $68,000 - $78,000, based on education, experience, location, and internal equity. Eligible for a profit share plan.

Requirements
- Minimum five years’ publishing experience with proven acquisitions and project‑management skills.
- Demonstrated abilities in copywriting and written communications.
- Experience growing agent contacts in the publishing world.
- Ability to acquire, develop, position, and edit a list of strong‑performing titles in humor, pop culture, and general non‑fiction.
- Strong self‑motivation and ability to work independently as well as in a creative team, modeling policies that promote an inclusive culture.
