Duties Help: At the DEA, our people are agents for change. As a DEA Special Agent, you will work as part of an elite criminal investigative team that transforms the power of your talent into action. That action makes a difference for the security and well‑being of our nation and the world every day.

Conduct complex criminal investigations targeting narcotics and drug‑related activities;

Prepare comprehensive and succinct criminal investigative reports and deliver briefings for senior personnel and other federal, state, and local agencies;

Identify and apprehend drug traffickers and arrest individuals engaged in criminal drug activities;

Gather and analyze evidence through investigative leads, seizures, arrests, execution of search warrants, and a variety of other means;

Testify on behalf of the federal government in court or before grand juries.

Additional duties may be assigned based upon an individual's unique knowledge, skills, and/or experience.

Basic Agent Training Applicants who have not completed previous federal law‑enforcement training through another federal agency must attend and complete a 16‑week residential training program. Current or former 1811 applicants who have successfully completed a federal criminal investigation training program through another federal law‑enforcement agency may qualify for a 3‑week Special Agent Transition Program (FCIT transcripts must be attached).

Requirements

U.S. citizenship required.

Must be able to obtain and maintain a Top‑Secret security clearance; each applicant will be reviewed individually according to agency suitability policy.

Must sign a mobility agreement confirming readiness to relocate to any DEA location.

Position requires pre‑employment medical clearance and annual medical examination.

Full‑scope pre‑employment polygraph required; 1811 applicants who have passed a polygraph with a current or former agency may seek reciprocity.

Selective Service: Males born after 12/31/59 must register or be exempt.

Applicant must be at least 21 years old and not older than 36 unless qualifying veteran or federal civilian law‑enforcement retirement position.

Successfully pass the E‑Verify employment verification check.

Serve a 1‑ or 2‑year trial period during which fitness and public‑interest contribution are evaluated.

Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license.

Subject to random drug testing.

Must successfully complete the 16‑week basic agent training (BAT) course at the DEA Training Academy in Quantico, Virginia.

If you are qualifying based on education, you must submit a copy of your transcript that clearly displays conferred degrees and/or relevant credit hours. An unofficial transcript will be accepted at the time of application.

GL‑07 Level

At least 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to GL/GS‑05, including activities such as:

Assisting in investigations of alleged or suspected violations of law;

Writing reports of findings for law‑enforcement activities and/or court cases;

Researching, collecting, and analyzing data from a variety of sources.

Experience may be substituted by one full year of graduate‑level education in a relevant field.

Superior Academic Achievement (SAA) applicants with a bachelor’s degree and SAA may qualify based on grades and honors.

Combination of education and experience may be used if the computed percentage of experience and education is at least 100 %.

GL‑09 Level

At least 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to GL/GS‑07, including:

Assisting investigations of alleged or suspected violations of law;

Collecting and analyzing data;

Writing reports and conducting briefings for law‑enforcement agencies;

Meeting or corresponding with court officials and law‑enforcement personnel;

Assisting prosecutors in case preparation or testifying.

Experience may be substituted by a master’s degree or equivalent graduate education, or by an LL.B. or J.D.

Combination of education and experience may be used if the computed percentage of experience and education is at least 100 %.

GS‑11 Level

At least 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to GL/GS‑09, including:

Conducting or supporting federal criminal investigations with federal agencies;

Developing operational plans and investigative priorities;

Operating undercover, conducting surveillance, participating in raids and arrests;

Developing and eliciting information from confidential sources;

Interviewing and interrogating persons suspected of violations of law;

Organizing evidence for prosecution and testifying in court.

Experience may be substituted by a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or by three years of progressively higher-level graduate education.

Combination of education and experience may be used if the computed percentage of experience and education is at least 100 %.

Education Education must be accredited by an institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Foreign education may be considered if comparable to U.S. accredited education. Provide evidence of accreditation when applying.

Additional Information

The position is exempt from the federal civilian hiring freeze.

Appointments will be made in accordance with 5 CFR 213.3210 (Schedule B), Excepted Service Appointments. May convert to permanent career appointments after 3–4 years.

Law Enforcement Availability Pay (LEAP) compensates for unscheduled work and availability.

Health and safety: Physical fitness required, including moderate to strenuous activity, firearms proficiency, and compliance with fire‑arm regulations.

All DEA applicants must disclose drug usage; past drug use may be evaluated on a case‑by‑case basis.

Relocation and mobility agreement required; full relocation expenses paid for former federal employees, limited for new federal employees.
