Job Description The Asset Strategy Leader is an experienced and established leader with the ability to influence across multiple functions and levels within AbbVie. The role serves as the matrix leader with overall accountability for an asset from discovery to end of life cycle, guiding and directing the creation and execution of a comprehensive asset strategy and phase-appropriate brand strategies for one or multiple assets. This position is based onsite in Irvine, CA or in North Chicago, IL. The Asset Strategy Leader is the primary face of the asset at AbbVie, working with governance, functional leaders, and other cross‑functional groups and external development partners to advance and optimize the value of the asset consistent with its prioritization in the overall portfolio.
Responsibilities
Chair an Asset Strategy Team (AST) and serve as the enterprise leader and primary point of contact for Pipeline Governance and senior management.
Develop and articulate an integrated cross‑functional global asset strategy and brand strategy for all aspects of product development, commercialization, and lifecycle management.
Place asset recommendations in the context of AbbVie’s enterprise objectives and maintain primary responsibility for deliverables, including a functionally aligned Global Asset Strategy and Product Development Plan (PDP).
Build strong, collaborative peer‑to‑peer relationships with governance team members and executives to enable optimal timely, multi‑directional, and comprehensive interactions with PCM Governance at pre‑specified milestones.
Ensure program resources stay within the allocated budget and champion incremental resource requests when appropriate, working continually with supporting teams to keep strategy consistent with the Target Product Profile (TPP) and the Portfolio Project Manager.
Validate the viability of the program from a scientific and commercial perspective, develop clear, prospective Go/No‑Go decision points, and serve as a champion for the program using objective judgment.
Act as a strategic advisor to cross‑functional teams, ensuring alignment on key deliverables such as the Integrated Evidence Plan, Regulatory Strategy plans, Brand plans, and Operations LRP plans.
Establish close, ongoing ties with asset and deliverable team members, foster a culture of inclusivity and psychological safety, and coach and mentor team members based on the High Performing Teams (HPT) model.
Represent the AST at interactions with external parties (e.g., Advisory Boards, regulatory interactions) when broad cross‑functional contributions are required, exhibiting exceptional executive presence and communication.
Maintain a comprehensive and up‑to‑date understanding of the competitive environment and assess potential impact on ongoing programs.
Focus the team and stakeholders on what matters, ask the right questions, and seek all points of view to find the best path forward.
Excel at communication.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree required; advanced (Doctoral‑level or MBA) degree highly preferred.
Relevant experience (minimum 5–8 years, 10+ years preferred) as a leader in a pharmaceutical/biotech commercial, R&D, regulatory or operations setting, with deep expertise in drug development or commercialization and across multiple therapy areas and phases of development.
High‑level strategic thinking, leadership, problem‑solving skills, and the ability to swiftly apply new knowledge to asset strategy and enterprise priorities.
Experience following a single asset and associated brands through all phases of development and commercialization, or aggregate experience across multiple assets.
Ability to motivate and elicit top performance from cross‑functional teams in a highly matrixed pharmaceutical environment, preferably with global scope.
Judgment and pragmatic problem‑solving skills, accountability for stakeholder advice, and ability to take unpopular decisions while ensuring appropriate organizational decisions.
Strong communication skills and ability to influence senior executives.
Demonstrated understanding of how discovery, development, regulatory, commercialization, and other elements fit together in the drug lifecycle.
Deep expertise in commercialization strategy execution, including R&D, regulatory, commercial, and/or manufacturing aspects.
Ability to delegate appropriate accountability and decision‑making to supporting teams and functions.

Individual compensation paid within this range will depend on many factors including geographic location, and may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range. The range may be modified in the future.
