Duties At the DEA, our people are agents for change. A unique mission requires special talent. As a DEA Special Agent, you will work as part of an elite criminal investigative team that transforms the power of your talent into action. That action makes a difference for the security and well‑being of our nation and the world every day.

Conduct complex criminal investigations targeting narcotics and drug‑related activities.

Prepare comprehensive and succinct criminal investigative reports and deliver briefings for senior personnel and other federal, state, and local agencies.

Identify and apprehend drug traffickers and arrest individuals engaged in criminal drug activities.

Gather and analyze evidence through investigative leads, seizures, arrests, execution of search warrants, and a variety of other means.

Testify on behalf of the Federal government in court or before grand juries.

Additional duties may be assigned based upon an individual's unique knowledge, skills, and/or experience.

Basic Agent Training Applicants who have not completed previous federal law‑enforcement training through another federal agency must attend and complete a 16‑week residential training program. Current or former 1811 applicants who have successfully completed a Federal Criminal Investigation training program may qualify for a 3‑week Special Agent Transition Program (FCIT transcripts must be attached).

Conditions of Employment

U.S. Citizenship Required.

Must be able to obtain and,我 maintain a Top‑Secret security clearance.

Must sign a mobility agreement confirming acceptance of relocation to any DEA location as required.

Requires completion of a pre‑employment medical clearance and annual medical examination.

A full‑scope pre‑employment polygraph is required.

Selective Service registration required for males born after 12/31/59.

Applicant must be at least 21 years of age and no older than 36 at time of appointment, unless eligible via veteran or Federal civilian retirement.

Selection will serve a 1‑year or 2‑year trial period for fitness evaluation.

Incumbent must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license.

Incumbent subject to random drug testing.

Required to complete the 16‑week Basic Agent Training (BAT) at the DEA Training Academy in Quantico, Virginia.

GL‑07 Level Requirements

One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GL/GS‑05 level that includes performing investigative duties such as assistance, writing reports, researching data.

-OR-

one full year of graduate level education in a relevant field or

-OR-

superior academic achievement (SAA) with required GPA or honors society membership.

Eligibility for upcoming graduates: Senior students expected to graduate within 9 months may qualify based on grades and maintained GPA.

Combination of education and experience may be used if the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.

GL‑09 Level Requirements

One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GL/GS‑07 level that includes assistance, collecting and analyzing data, writing reports, briefings, corresponding with court officials, assisting prosecuting attorneys, or testifying.

Substitution of education: Master's, 2 full years of graduate education leading to a degree, or LL.B. or J.D.

combination of education and experience totaling at least 100%.

GS‑11 Level Requirements

One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GL/GS‑09 level that includes conducting or supporting federal criminal investigations, developing operational plans, undercover operations, surveillance, raids, seizures, arrests, source management, interviews, evidence organization, and testifying.

Substitution of education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or three years of graduate education leading to a Ph.D., LL.M. if related.

combination of education and experience totaling at least 100%.

Education Education must be accredited by an accredited institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Foreign education may be considered if comparable. Supplementary bieng:

Pass/Fail courses: If >10% of undergraduate work was pass/fail, SAA must be based on class standing or honor society membership.

Graduate education: One year of graduate education is considered 18 semester hours. If a graduate school definition is unavailable, 18 semester hours will satisfy one year.

Medical Requirements Moderate to strenuous physical exertion is required. Must pass a pre‑employment medical examination. Any condition that poses a health hazard is disqualifying.

Firearms Requirement Must be authorized to carry动态 firearm and maintain proficiency.kino version 18 U.S.C. Section 922(g)(9) applies. Must verify no misdemeanor domestic violence convictions.

Employment Drug Policy All down applicants must disclose current and past drug usage. Prior drug use may be assessed on a case‑by‑case basis.

Mobility Agreement All selected candidates must sign a mobility agreement; readiness of family members for relocation is required.

Relocation Expenses Full relocation expenses for transfers from another federal position. New federal employees may cover expenses not covered by DEA policies.
