Job Title: Electrical Designer II

Job Location: 12301 Kurland Drive, Houston, TX 77034

Primary Function: Perform design duties using mid-level design skills and techniques for medium/high voltage substation or transmission line projects. Assignments are loosely supervised and are designed to develop the employee’s understanding of electrical physical, P&C, civil/structural, or transmission design techniques, implement corporate/client standards, and procedures. Electrical designers will be dedicated to Electrical projects, but will assist on Civil/Structural or Transmission design projects as needed.

Duties & Responsibilities

Direct drafting team to create new drawings from examples of previous project and/or standards

Produce Engineering support tasks with minimal supervision

Perform lighting studies

Produce High Voltage substation sections and detail drawings from a General Arrangement Plan

Produce conduit & Grounding plan and detail drawings.

Calculate cable lengths, conduit fill, or other basic tasks.

Create Substation Bill of Materials, including manufacturer part numbers, quantities, footage, etc.

Create wiring diagrams for panels and yard equipment from schematics

Perform partial vendor document reviews

Complete work in pre-defined times to meet proposal and project schedules.

Strong knowledge on where to find applicable go-by’s

Provide mentoring and training for development of peers

Strong knowledge of substation terminology and symbology

Apply extensive knowledge of corporate and client standards to drafting, design, and engineering practices

Excellent understanding of industry standards such as ANSI, ASCE, ASTM, NEC, IEEE, NFPA, etc.

Strong knowledge of industry equipment/material providers

Back-check peer’s drawings for quality control

Properly use the document management system

Take personal responsibility for the quality and accuracy of his/her work

May be required to communicate directly with the client in checking in/out drawings or requesting new drawing numbers

Bring potential project-related problems and possible solutions to the attention of the responsible party

Travel out of town for short periods of time as required by projects and assignments

Escorted site visits to energized substations or industrial installations

Carry out other duties as needed

Minimum Qualifications / Experience Associates Degree in Drafting & Design, Electrical Technology, or equivalent is preferred. Three years of high voltage substation design experience is required.

Experience with Microstation is a plus, but not required

3D modeling experience is a plus, but not required

College-level geometry

Strong skills in word processing, spreadsheet, and e-mail software

Expert-level knowledge of various CADD programs

Expert-level capabilities in drafting, scaling, drawing layout, and a high degree of accuracy in copying/using go-by’s

Not only working, but possibly leading, in a team environment

Communicating effectively, both written and verbal, with co-workers

Physical Requirements:

This position requires minimal physical effort.

Must be able to endure prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer for a minimum of 8 hours a day

While performing the duties of this job, the employee will primarily work indoors, with occasional outdoor exposure to year around weather conditions and noise.

Must be able and willing to travel overnight for trainings and/or meetings as required (10%)

Working extended hours, including weekends, may be required periodically.

May occasionally lift up to 25 pounds at a time.
