HVAC Mechanic II Department Summary

The HVAC II supports the Department of Facilities Management by installing heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems and related fixtures across campus facilities. The role includes inspecting HVAC/R equipment for malfunctions, performing preventive maintenance, and completing repairs to ensure systems operate safely, efficiently, and reliably. The technician also assists with related duties as assigned, contributing to the department’s mission of maintaining high‑quality, comfortable, and well‑functioning environments for the campus community. Monday – Friday, 1:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday off. Responsibilities
Install heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment, controls, and related fixtures. Check equipment for malfunctioning by observing pressure and vacuum gauges, adjusting controls, injecting refrigerant, and using testing equipment such as voltmeters and ohmmeters. Maintain, rebuild, and repair by replacing worn or defective parts, pumping specified gas or fluids, lubricating motors and bearings, and changing filters. Calculate heat loads for new installations and analyze and treat open and closed water systems such as cooling towers. Perform related work such as making and assembling metal ducts and chassis parts, drilling holes for mounting brackets, screwing, boring, riveting, and welding parts, and installing shells and cabinets of systems. Maintain adequate inventory of equipment and materials. Determine materials and/or equipment necessary for a job and on‑job procedure changes. Participate in on‑call rotation and details. Other duties as assigned. Lead person in shop for all HVAC Mechanic I’s. Required Qualifications
Applicants must have at least two years of full‑time, or equivalent part‑time technical experience in the installation, maintenance and repair of HVAC systems, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and substitutions below. Knowledge of preventive maintenance procedures for HVAC systems and related electrical systems. Knowledge of lubricating machinery and equipment. Knowledge of hand tool care and maintenance. Knowledge of safety practices and procedures for HVAC systems. Knowledge of terminology, coding, symbols and abbreviations used in HVAC systems. Knowledge of pipe threading techniques. Skill in using small hand tools and power tools. Skill in using electrical testing equipment. Skill in operating HVAC machinery and related equipment. Knowledge of electrical, electronic and pneumatic HVAC control systems. Ability to understand and apply policies, procedures, specifications, standards and guidelines governing assigned unit activities. Ability to read and interpret documents such as specifications, operation manuals and blueprints. Mechanical aptitude and manual dexterity. Current and valid Massachusetts State Driver’s License. Participate in the on‑call rotation. Preferred Qualifications
