Position Summary The Fixed Equipment Maintenance Superintendent is responsible for leading the day-to-day execution of all fixed equipment maintenance activities across the refinery. This role oversees a union craft workforce, staff supervisors, and two Fixed Equipment Planners, ensuring that all work is safely planned, scheduled, and executed in alignment with Calumet's standards.
This is a senior field leadership role requiring deep technical knowledge of pressure equipment, strong maintenance discipline, and the ability to drive craft productivity, safety, and quality. The ideal candidate has 10+ years of experience as a maintenance superintendent or equivalent leader in a refinery or chemical plant. A Mechanical Engineering degree is preferred.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Team Management:
Directly supervise union craft personnel, staff supervisors, and two Fixed Equipment Planners.
Oversee manpower allocation, craft discipline, and daily field activities.
Build strong relationships with union leadership and ensure performance expectations are met.
Develop talent, mentor emerging leaders, and promote a culture of accountability and teamwork.
Maintenance Execution (Fixed Equipment):
Oversee all corrective and preventive maintenance for pressure vessels, heat exchangers, piping systems, tanks and towers, boilers, heaters, and structural assets.
Provide strong technical direction on troubleshooting, repairs, fabrication, bolt-up, rigging, and mechanical work quality.
Ensure work is executed according to drawings, job packages, and Calumet mechanical standards.
Coordinate closely with Operations, Engineering, Reliability, and Inspectors.
Planning, Scheduling & Work Management:
Lead and develop two Fixed Equipment Planners to ensure high-quality job packages.
Ensure planning accuracy: scope, BOMs, drawings, tools, materials, and permitting.
Review weekly schedules and drive schedule adherence.
Manage backlog health and ensure work is prioritized correctly.
Ensure feedback, closeout comments, labor reporting, and lessons learned are completed accurately and on time.
Safety & Quality Leadership:
Maintain a strong field presence to reinforce safety and craftsmanship.
Ensure compliance with LOTO, Confined Space, Hot Work, and all Calumet safety policies.
Uphold high standards for welding, fabrication, QA/QC, bolting, hydrotesting, and mechanical workmanship.
Stop unsafe work and correct improper practices immediately.
Coordination & Communication:
Lead daily execution meetings with planners, supervisors, and craft leads.
Communicate priorities clearly and make real-time adjustments to support operations.
Work with Inspection and Reliability to coordinate repair windows and access.
Support turnaround planning as needed for fixed equipment scope.
Performance, Cost & Continuous Improvement:
Monitor key metrics: schedule attainment, backlog, wrench time, cost performance, and PM compliance.
Identify productivity improvements, remove barriers, and standardize best practices.
Reduce rework through disciplined planning, preparation, and field quality verification.
Drive Lean and Six Sigma principles to eliminate waste and improve workflow.
Qualifications Required
Minimum 10 years of experience in refinery or chemical plant maintenance leadership.
Strong technical expertise in fixed equipment and pressure systems.
Demonstrated success managing union craft labor.
Experience leading planners and supervising daily execution.
Proficiency in SAP or JDE, Microsoft Office, and maintenance work management systems.
Strong communication, leadership, and decision-making skills.
Preferred
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing, Continuous Improvement, or Six Sigma.
Experience supporting turnaround planning and execution for fixed equipment.
Strong troubleshooting, fabrication, and repair knowledge.
