Job Overview Outside Machinist (J4)

– Norfolk, Virginia Work schedule: 0600 to 1445 with a 45‑minute lunch break.

Education & Experience

High School diploma or equivalent.

Minimum of 5 (five) years directly related experience in a shipyard environment.

Must meet all Journeyman 3 Outside Machinist requirements.

Must be able to furnish sizes and clearance and also provide recommendations to supervisor.

Able to read and use technical manuals, blueprints, and specification items.

Essential Functions and Duties

A. Machinery Overhaul and Installation

Winches (electric driven, electro hydraulic).

Anchor windlasses.

Steering gear.

Air compressors.

Pump and motor alignments.

Valve repairs.

Diesel engine repairs.

Hydraulic troubleshooting and repairs.

Reduction gear repairs.

Generator repairs.

Boat davit repairs.

Bearing fit‑up and installation.

Gas turbine repairs.

Louvers.

Aircraft elevators.

Underwater hull strainer plates.

Cranes.

Brakes.

Resilient mounts.

Emitter belts.

OD box removal/install.

Sliding pad eyes.

Raw track.

B. Propulsion Experience

Shafting repairs and alignment, fixed and controllable pitch.

Propeller removal and installation.

Rudder repair and installation.

C. Tool Requirements

Operate grinder (fixed and portable).

Operate drill press (fixed and portable).

Operate presses.

Operate portable power tools.

Use hydraulic jacks.

Use torches and torque wrenches.

Use assorted combination wrenches.

Use socket sets.

Use slip‑joint pliers.

Use adjustable wrenches.

Use wire pliers.

Use hammers, flat head, small bowl.

Use screwdrivers (flat and Phillips).

Use vise grips.

Use 6” scale or 12” tape measure.

Use snap‑ring pliers.

Use micrometers, dial indicators, calipers.

Use pipe wrench.

Use punch set and chisels.

Other tools as needed.

Physical Requirements Must be able to climb on, around ships, and walk to other yard areas. Requires extended periods of standing and walking (75%). Lifting/carrying tools and parts up to 50 lbs. on a frequent basis. Must be able to work in tight, confined spaces on board ship and be exposed to varied temperatures, wind, wet and humid conditions, fumes, odors, and dust. Visual acuity, hearing, and hand/eye coordination are required.

Working Relationships This position reports to the Shop Foreman/General Foreman and/or works with Crew Lead. It develops and maintains a positive working relationship with other machinists and supports a team approach in the pursuit of common company goals.

Principal Responsibilities

Ensure a Work Authorization Form (WAF) is posted for the specific job. No work will be performed without a WAF.

Comply with all safety requirements related to the job (e.g., special staging, face shields, protective clothing, breathing apparatus).

Be trained or qualified for the work assigned (e.g., JLG, forklift, welding, brazing, special electrical/mechanical repairs).

Work as safely and productively as possible, maintaining quality control at all times.

Accomplish a 30‑minute cool‑down period in hot work areas.

Leave the job site in a safe and clean condition before departure.

Complete repairs or installations as assigned with no supervision.

Accountability Responsible for the effective, efficient, and safe accomplishment of all assigned tasks. Accountable to Foreman/General Foreman and customer for safety, quality, cost, and schedule.
