Overview The HEC Underwriter is responsible for evaluating and approving Home Equity Cashout (also known as Home Equity Investment) transactions. The underwriter assesses credit risk, property valuation, title/lien position, and regulatory compliance to ensure each transaction aligns with underwriting standards and risk management objectives. This role balances disciplined credit judgment with timely execution to deliver a positive customer experience.
Responsibilities
Review submitted applications, credit reports, financial statements, and other supporting documents to analyze creditworthiness, income stability, assets, liabilities, and overall risk profile.
Verify completeness and accuracy of all required documentation, including title reports, insurance, and disclosures.
Evaluate key risk factors, including credit history, loan-to-value ratios, property value and condition, occupancy, liquidity, title position, and marketability.
Review property valuations, appraisals, inspection report, and market data to confirm collateral adequacy and assess risks specific to Home Equity Investment products.
Collaborate with Sales, Operations, and Risk to resolve issues, structure approvable transactions, and support timely closings.
Identify potential fraud, inconsistencies, or other red flags in applications.
Document clear and defensible credit rationales for approvals, declines, and exceptions.
Support quality control, second look, and audit reviews; maintain accurate underwriting documentation and ensure consistent compliance with regulatory requirements.
Stay up to date on industry trends, market conditions, and regulation changes.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Finance, Business, Economics, or related field (or equivalent)
Two years of underwriting experience in home equity, mortgage, or real estate investment products. Home Equity Investment experience is preferred.
Strong knowledge of credit analysis, property valuation, and regulatory compliance.
Proficiency in underwriting systems and tools (experience with LendingPad a plus).
Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities under tight deadlines.
Effective communication skills to interact with internal teams and clients.
