Position Overview

We are seeking a dedicated and skilled full-time newspaper reporter to join our team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for researching, investigating and writing news stories for publication online and in print. This role requires strong journalistic skills, a commitment to accuracy, and the ability to work under deadlines.

Key Responsibilities

• Research and investigate news stories through interviews, observation and examination of public records
• Write clear, accurate and engaging news articles in accordance with journalistic standards and editorial guidelines
• Conduct interviews with sources, including officials, experts and community members
• Cover assigned beats, such as local government, education, business or community events
• Work under daily, weekly or project-based deadlines for story submission
• Verify facts and sources to ensure accuracy and credibility of all published content
• Effectively communicate developments on stories and coverage
• Stay informed about current events, trends and issues relevant to the community and beat coverage
• Attend meetings, press conferences and community events as required
• Maintain ethical standards of journalism, including objectivity and fairness

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in mass communication or related field preferred
• Previous experience in journalism or news reporting (internships or college newspaper experience may be considered)
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Strong research and investigative skills
• Ability to work independently and meet tight deadlines
• Proficiency with digital media and social media platforms
• Willingness and ability to learn the digital tools we use in our newsroom, including Blox Total CMS and Second Street
• Valid driver's license and reliable transportation for field reporting
• Knowledge of AP Style and journalistic ethics

Preferred Skills

• Experience with multimedia journalism, including photography and video
• Familiarity with data journalism and public records research
• Established network of sources within the community

Work Environment

This is a full-time position based in our newsroom, with frequent travel required for field reporting. The role may require irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, and some holidays, depending on news coverage needs.

Compensation and Benefits

$18/$20 per hr salary range depending on experience, plus benefits.
