Description / Position Overview

About this Position: This position investigates crimes with an underlying factual basis of gun violence that have received an initial patrol response. The CCI assigned to the Crime Laboratory’s NIBIN Program examines physical evidence associated with firearms in a laboratory setting and performs BrassTrax image acquisitions of fired cartridge cases for entry into the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN). Note: There is no field work associated with this position. This is a special at-will grant funded position with funding through December, 2026, and an anticipated extension to complete 12 full months of work. As aNIBIN CCI, You Will

Review and triage evidence cartridge cases for BrassTrax acquisition and NIBIN entry. Conduct examinations of submitted firearms for trace evidence and operability/safety Test firing of firearms and selection of best samples for BrassTrax acquisition and NIBIN entry. Performs BrassTrax/NIBIN acquisitions of all suitable evidence in accordance with ATF guidelines and laboratory standard operating procedures. Thoroughly document all examinations conducted and produce technical reports detailing analysis. Maintains chain of custody for all evidence processed. Performs technical and administrative reviews of reports. Provides expert witness courtroom testimony. Maintain statistical data used for grant reporting purposes Provide training as requested in area of assignment. Maintain statistical data used for grant reporting purposes Work with other community/partner agencies as appropriate.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

Techniques, theories, and methods of investigation Criminal procedures related to evidence and criminal investigations Principles of filing and record keeping Modern office technology and supporting software Pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations Properly and safely operate a motor vehicle Work closely with, and at the direction of, police officers Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word and Excel)

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in a related area of study, preferably in social work, behavioral sciences, criminal justice, or other social/science related area. Five years of full-time, professional experience in a related field. Possess, or obtain upon hire, and maintain, a valid, non-probationary Colorado driver\'s license not subject to restriction related to alcohol and/or drug violations or pending charges Possess or obtain within three months of hire, the following certifications: National Crime Information Center (NCIC) Certification, Colorado Crime Information Center (CCIC) Certification

Education and Experience Equivalence: One year of relevant work experience may be substituted for one year of required education (OR) one year of relevant academic coursework beyond the minimum requirement may be substituted for one year of required professional experience.

Preferred Qualifications

College level coursework in the criminal justice field Five years experience as a sworn police officer Three years of investigative experience Computer based investigative skills Experience and knowledge of a wide variety of guns
