Position Title: Aquaculture Technician - Moli'i Fish pond
Location: On-site - Kāne'ohe, Hawai'i
Schedule: Full-time; Monday through Friday, 6:30am - 4:30pm. Flexibility required for peak harvest periods and seasonal demands.
Reports To: Diversified Agriculture Moli'i Site Manager
Position Summary The Oyster Aquaculture Technician supports the healthy cultivation, harvesting, and handling of oysters grown within the Moli'i Fishpond. This role plays a critical part in sustainable food production and environmental stewardship, contributing to the care and maintenance of aquaculture systems, site infrastructure, and surrounding grounds. The ideal candidate is hands-on, adaptable, and committed to mālama 'āina practices while working independently in a physically demanding outdoor environment.
Essential Responsibilities
Perform daily oyster cultivation activities including feeding, monitoring, harvesting, and handling to ensure optimal oyster health and product quality.
Maintain aquaculture infrastructure including ponds, tanks, lines, racks, and related equipment.
Conduct general site maintenance of fishpond grounds, tools, and facilities.
Assist with basic carpentry, plumbing, and landscaping tasks related to aquaculture operations.
Support animal husbandry best practices and adhere to food safety and handling standards.
Maintain accurate records related to oyster growth, harvest yields, and inventory.
Assist with product preparation and sales support as needed.
Follow all safety, environmental, and stewardship protocols while working in and around water.
Communicate effectively with supervisors and team members regarding operational needs, observations, and issues.
Perform Palekana (safety and security) duties as assigned.
Perform other duties as assigned in support of aquaculture and stewardship operations.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent required.
General maintenance and labor experience preferred, including carpentry, plumbing, or landscaping.
Experience or interest in aquaculture, animal husbandry, agriculture, or environmental stewardship preferred.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Strong communication skills and basic math proficiency.
Basic recordkeeping and organizational skills.
Valid driver's license with a good driving record required.
Physical Requirements
Ability to perform highly physical labor in varied outdoor and marine environments.
Ability to lift, carry, and move up to.
Ability to work in wet, muddy, hot, windy, or rainy conditions for extended periods.
Ability to stand, walk, bend, climb, and work near or in water safely.
Work Environment This position is primarily based outdoors at the Moli'i Fishpond and involves exposure to marine environments, weather conditions, and physical labor. Safety awareness and adherence to environmental protocols are essential.
