Job Description

AbbVie seeks an accomplished intellectual property litigator with strategic judgment and strong communication skills to manage an active docket of global patent and other IP litigation cases. This attorney will report to the head of AbbVie’s IP Litigation Group, part of the Intellectual Property, Transactions, and Innovation legal team, and will be based at the headquarters in North Chicago, Illinois with a hybrid work model (on site 3+ days/week).

Overview

As a member of AbbVie’s litigation team you will develop and drive strategy for your matters, provide counsel to internal clients on patent litigation, trade secret and licensing disputes, and operate as an independent, self‑sufficient attorney within a collaborative team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Managing AbbVie’s U.S. and international patent litigation matters, trade secret matters, and other IP‑related disputes, driving strategy with outside counsel and partnering with key internal clients;
  • Participating in key litigation proceedings, including depositions, hearings, mediations, arbitrations, settlement conferences, and trials;
  • Providing expert counsel on all IP litigation and related issues;
  • Advising senior management on a broad range of key global IP litigation issues;
  • Negotiating and drafting settlement agreements.

Qualifications

  • Law degree from an ABA accredited law school with good standing in the state bar of the jurisdiction in which your office will be located (or ability to gain licensure in that state);
  • 5+ years of major law firm and/or in‑house patent or IP litigation experience;
  • Excellent communication, analytical, organization, and negotiation skills, including the ability to convey and discuss IP issues in understandable terms;
  • Creative thinking and problem‑solving skills;
  • Strong interest and aptitude in science;
  • Preference candidates with significant experience in molecular biology, biotechnology, biochemistry, biology, chemistry, chemical engineering, or biomedical engineering;
  • Hybrid work opportunity requiring at minimum three (3) days onsite in our North Chicago, IL offices.

Additional Information

  • The compensation range described below is the range of possible base pay compensation that the Company believes in good faith it will pay for this role at the time of this posting based on the job grade for this position. Individual compensation paid within this range will depend on many factors, including geographic location, and we may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range. This range may be modified in the future.
  • We offer a comprehensive package of benefits, including paid time off (vacation, holidays, sick), medical/dental/vision insurance, and 401(k) to eligible employees.
  • This job is eligible to participate in our short‑term incentive programs.
