Overview

The Consumer Credit Underwriter plays a crucial role in our organization by evaluating and analyzing completed credit applications to determine the creditworthiness of potential customers. This position is responsible for making informed decisions regarding the extension of credit, ensuring compliance with company policies and industry regulations. The Underwriter will assess financial information, analyze credit histories, and apply risk management principles to support sound credit decisions that align with our company's strategic objectives. Responsibilities

Works with completed loan applications provided by loan interviewers to make decisions on extending credit. Analyzes applicant financial status, credit, and collateral evaluation to determine feasibility of granting loan and approves or denies. Forwards that information to the loan interviewer. Corresponds/converses with interviewers frequently to resolve questions regarding application information provided and further delve into the member’s situation to assist in being able to grant credit to the member. Has a tolerance for risk while appreciating the policy guidelines and requirements set out in regulation. Analyzes potential lending opportunities involved in each lending situation to further assist the borrower as well as increase the credit union's lending portfolio. Responsible for underwriting all consumer loan products including but not limited to auto, unsecured personal loans, Home Equity Lines of Credit etc. Assist with re-negotiations of loans based on lending guidelines, serve as a technical resource on difficult problems and questions; handle escalated calls: provide feedback and training to lending staff Effectively communicate with Lending staff, Management, and Members concerning approved and declined consumer loans Perform in accordance with the credit union’s efficiency standards Ensure compliance with all laws, and regulations as they apply to consumer and small business lending Maintain the privacy and confidentiality of the information obtained in the underwriting and lending process Maximize portfolio revenue by practicing sound underwriting judgment and risk management principles Perform special projects and tasks as required by the department Exercises discretion and good judgement in the performance of essential job functions Essential Functions

Assist in attaining the lending goals and objectives of the credit union. Professional approach to assessing the credit needs of members. Professional appearance and attitude as well as the ability to communicate effectively with members and staff. Qualifications

1-2 years of banking, credit underwriting and or lending experience and knowledge of consumer loan products Possess knowledge of credit analysis Understanding of accounting principles and both business and personal financial statements and tax returns Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office products Effective time management in meeting the Credit Union’s efficiency standards Ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment Excellent communication skills (oral and written) Strong interpersonal skills Required Knowledge

Ability to read and interpret documents such as credit bureau reports, debt to income ratio reports, policy and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively with borrowers and other employees of credit union. Must have an analytical mind with the ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where guidelines are available but extensive individual evaluation is required. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written form, including but not limited to loan policy, procedural manuals, and compliance with appropriate regulations. Ability to operate standard office equipment and tools such as fax machine, telephones, photocopier, personal computer, and utilize appropriate versions of current computer software (e.g., Microsoft Office). This position requires the ability to sit for extended periods, use a computer and standard office equipment, read and analyze detailed documents, communicate clearly in verbal and written form.
