Job Description
MHC Healthcare is seeking a Nutritionist to join the WIC Nutrition Services team at the Marana Main Health Center, located in the heart of Marana, AZ.Under the supervision of the Nutrition Education Manager, the Nutritionist screens, certifies and provides comprehensive nutrition assessments to participants for the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC). Provides participant-centered services according to federal guidelines, rules and regulations. MHC Healthcare is a Federally Qualified Community Health Center (FQHC), with 17 sites in Tucson and Pima County.Our mission is to improve our Community by providing exceptional, whole-person healthcare. The following qualifications are required: Bachelor’s Degree from a program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) (Didactic Program in Dietetics) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (may be completed with MHC upon hire) First Aid certification (may be completed with MHC upon hire) Fingerprint Clearance Card through the Arizona Department of Public Safety (or ability to obtain upon hire) Current Arizona driver’s license with clean driving record and proof of current vehicle insurance (39-month MVR will be run by MHC) The following qualifications are preferred: Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered if applicable and must be directly related to the functions and body of knowledge required to successfully perform the job. This position has the following supervisory responsibility: Does not direct or supervise others. The ideal candidate will also possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities: Computer proficient Excellent customer service, organizational, and communication skills with emphasis on responsiveness, building trust, mutual respect, and courtesy. Able to successfully complete Certified Breastfeeding Consultant (CBC) or equivalent breastfeeding course within six (6) months of hire. Demonstrates multicultural awareness – respectful of diversity in client population. Demonstrates critical thinking skills. Understanding of WIC program requirements, including the WIC nutrition assessment process and acceptable anthropometric measurement practices. Thorough knowledge of human nutrition, normal nutrition issues for pregnancy, lactation, the postpartum period, infancy and early childhood. Familiarity with public health nutrition programs, principles, services, and available health and human services resources within the community. Knowledge of the principles of participant-centered education, critical thinking and behavioral change theories. Basic arithmetic to accurately perform computations. Duties and Responsibilities: Assists with training new and existing employees. Analyzes health and nutrition histories based on lifecycle stages. Evaluates the impact of the parent/feeding dynamics on nutritional status, growth and development. Provides participant-centered nutrition education to medium-risk participants, individually or in groups according to age, category, health risks and family needs. Approves infant formula and tailors participants’ food packages. Develops rapport and fosters open communication with participants and caretakers. Completes eligibility screenings, records documentation, food benefit issuance, schedules appointments and provides nutrition education and referrals to other programs using culturally appropriate communication styles to collect information. Demonstrates appropriate anthropometric measurement techniques and hematological data collection by obtaining measurements of stature, weight and hemoglobin. Refers high-risk participants to the Registered Dietitian for counseling and follow-up. Promotes breastfeeding and breastfeeding support activities and refers to the International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) as needed. Loads and issues food benefits and eWIC cards when applicable to WIC participants. Maintains security and inventory of food benefits supplies and eWIC cards. Uses interpretation and/or translation services as needed to collect information from clients with limited English proficiency. Plans and participates in community outreach activities. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with employees, other agencies and the public. Attends statewide nutrition education workshops, regional training, departmental in-services and MHC-sponsored in-services as assigned.
