TITLE: Principal, Senior Building Science Specialist
FLSA STATUS: Exempt
LOCATION: Washington, DC area
REPORTS TO: Regional Director, U.S. East
POSITION SUMMARY
This is a leadership role important to RDH's growth in the Greater New York Metropolitan Area markets immediately, and opportunities along the East Coast. The role will focus on the development of building enclosure consulting for new and existing buildings in the eastern US region. The role will also focus on providing technical leadership in the areas of investigation, rehabilitation, and design of building enclosure systems on historic and contemporary structures. This includes your specialized and focused experience in the design and integration of complex building enclosures systems, including waterproofing, air and water barriers, rain screen cladding, and fenestration systems. existing building repairs, rehabilitation,
The role will contribute to the growth of RDH's presence in the US East region which includes markets east of the Mississippi River from Maine to Florida. There will also be opportunities to collaborate with other RDH offices and teams across the company in the US West Region and Canadian markets.
This role is involved in a variety of project work, leading projects as a Project Principal, Technical Specialist, and/or Project Manager. The position requires the application of building science principles to a wide range of new building construction, forensic investigations, and repair and renewal projects for existing buildings. The position will also include developing client relationships, identifying and responding to project opportunities and RFPs in the local market, and developing and delivering building science services to clients with new and existing facilities, including forensics, litigation, and insurance. RESPONSIBILITIES: Work with US East team on a day-to-day basis to grow and lead a team based in the New York City office, as Project Principal and Project Manager, to efficiently and reliably source and deliver services on projects within scope and budget. Manage overall project performance. Work with Regional Director and other leadership colleagues to source assistance from other offices and on decisions regarding timing of adding and selecting new Assist our clients and other project team members including other consultants and contractors to better ensure the successful design and implementation of effective building enclosures. Review design drawings, specifications and construction related submittals based on building science fundamentals and project performance criteria to provide useful input. Evaluate contractor performance and assist them to ensure project deliverables and quality standards are achieved Maintain regular communication and coordination with clients and colleagues regarding project status, site issues, project quality, and collaboration efforts to resolve issues as required. Lead investigations and condition assessments to determine repair and renewal Coordinate with project teams and firm resources to prepare construction-related drawings, specifications, and reports for existing building Contribute to company knowledge management and practice Contribute to the firm's reputation in the market and help build client base through a range of appropriate business development Develop our people to ensure their and RDH's growth. EDUCATION:
Bachelor's Degree in engineering or Applied Science is required Master's degree in engineering or Applied Science, specializing in building science is preferred EXPERIENCE: Minimum of 10 years of experience in building science and engineering, with knowledge of architecture and construction with a focus on building enclosure systems Field experience and construction activity review experience Demonstrated business development experience Client facing experience particularly with developers, architects, building owners and other project team members Proven success leading new construction projects involving large and small buildings PROFESSIONAL REGISTRATION: Designation as a Professional Engineer (P.E.) required SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES: Superior technical knowledge of building science, building enclosure design and construction Ability to build collaborative relationships with clients, staff, and consultants Ability to gather and diagnose information, interpret data and drawings and assess conditions for multiple components Analytical problem-solving skills and strong investigative aptitude, including ability to troubleshoot and diagnose building performance issues Proven team player who fosters teamwork and cooperation Fast learner with the ability to develop technical and interpersonal skills Superior ability to communicate complex technical information to staff, clients, and trades Superior ability to shift focus between changing priorities Solid project management skills and the ability to manage performance of others Excellent verbal and written communication skills including presentation skills Strong work ethic, eager to assume responsibility quickly Excellent attention to detail Excellent organizational skills Strong desire and potential to be a leader in the industry Our collaborative team fuels our mission of Making Buildings Better. Service Area Leadership: Lead an RDH service or service area corporately or regionally including leading technical, business development, and client interface Take ownership of and continually improve on RDH's playbooks and ways of working. Business Development Leadership: Actively pursue and develop project work through existing client relationships Develop new client relationships within and beyond our current geographic reach Develop new services that support RDH's Mission and Vision Operations, Business and Strategic Leadership: Participate as a member of one or more of the corporate, regional, or service area committees Lead an aspect of operations or other facet of business at RDH In addition to the above noted attributes, Principals must meet the following criteria:
