National Political Reporter
The Philadelphia Inquirer's politics team is looking for an ambitious and experienced political reporter to lead its national coverage as we head into major elections in 2026 and 2028 with Pennsylvania and its politicians primed to play key roles.
This reporter will play a crucial role in covering congressional races across Pennsylvania in 2026, steering coverage of the impact of President Donald Trump's policies on the state and its residents, and working with a team to closely cover Gov. Josh Shapiro as he lays groundwork for a potential presidential run.
This role involves collaboration with other journalists on an award-winning team. We're looking for a well-sourced and experienced reporter who is ready to play an instrumental role in coverage from Day 1.
The National Political Reporter will appeal to both a local and national audience as it reveals the political dynamics of a crucial swing state while delivering news and explaining the context in smart, digital formats.
What You'll Do: Lead coverage of the open seat congressional race in Philadelphia in 2026 and the match-ups in four Pennsylvania swing districts. Produce deep enterprise reporting on the state's political figures in the lead up to the 2028 election when the state could decide both the presidency and control of the U.S. Senate. Use polling data and voter interviews to provide unique insights into the state's electorate. Cover Pennsylvania's congressional delegation, generating scoops and accountability reporting. Identify local angles when major national political news breaks. Travel regularly between Philadelphia and Washington and across Pennsylvania. This reporter should be equally comfortable walking the halls of Congress as they are swinging through Scranton. Contribute to an inclusive and positive work environment What We're Looking for:
A willingness and ability to collaborate on deadline with other members of the politics team and the newsroom as a whole. Deep knowledge of Pennsylvania and its politics, as well as a familiarity with Congress. A vision for how you would quickly source up to build a rolodex that extends from Philly's wards to Capitol Hill. An enthusiasm for covering politics and a fountain of story ideas. An openness to experiment with different story formats in order to best deliver information to our readers. The ability to uncover information even when campaigns or political offices are uncooperative. A readiness to compete with national outlets as Pennsylvania takes center stage in the political conversation.
