This position performs highly specialized maintenance and supervisory work at a County Golf Course. The position allocated to this class performs all maintenance activities and supervise personnel at a County golf course under the direction of the Golf Course Superintendent. Employees are expected to be available for personal and physical response to any unusual or compelling situation at his/her assigned course twenty-four hours per day and resolve same. This classification is distinguished from the Golf Course Maintenance Specialist classification by the additional supervisory responsibilities, on-call status and management tasks specifically related to the maintenance and operation of a golf course. Work is reviewed through conferences, reports and observation of overall results achieved.**Job Description:****ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS*** Plans, organizes, and coordinates daily work activities, prepares work schedules and monitors work quality.* Assists in the development of policies and procedures.* Carries out policies and specific instructions of the Golf Course Superintendent, continuously keeping him/her appraised of course and equipment status.* Assists with planning long term goals and hiring new staff.* Assists in the supervision of all working personnel on the golf course including issuing work assignments to Golf maintenance staff, coordinating maintenance, repair, construction and course set-up activities and performing a wide variety of skilled maintenance and assignments.* Exercises independent judgment in determining course conditions and prioritizing work assignments with the input of the Superintendent.* Identifies training needs; provides training to existing staff and new personnel; and assists or instructs others in the operation and/or maintenance of new and highly specialized equipment, including troubleshooting and safety aspects.* Responsible for direct maintenance of the assigned course including, mowing, trimming, cup placement, and bunker maintenance.* Responsible for building repair, loading, hauling and unloading construction or landscape material and repair of roads, pathways, fences, related facilities.* Works with various herbicides, pesticides, and chemicals, and their proper application.* Aerates greens, tees and fairways.* Assists in the construction, building or remodeling of greens, traps and bunkers; assists in cutting, trimming and rolling of greens, raking sand traps and cutting cups.* Performs minor carpentry, plumbing and electrical work related to golf course maintenance.* Participates in special projects; works with various internal and external staff and customers for special event preparation, coordination and set up.* Performs general maintenance, repair and installation of complex golf course irrigation systems by operating ditching machines, gluing fittings, installing electric valves, wiring, sprinkler heads and time clocks.* Performs general janitorial/maintenance activities in golf course facilities, including replenishing supplies and cleaning restrooms and emptying trash.* Performs general maintenance, overhauls and repairs work on small and/or light equipment such as mowing equipment and power tools; adjusts and replaces parts to ensure the safe and effective functioning of equipment.* May operate heavy equipment including backhoe, snowplow, and dump truck.* May operate equipment related to golf course maintenance including power tools, mowers, sprayers, turf equipment and snow blowers.* Participates in the Assistant Superintendent Employee Development Program, to include job shadowing counterparts at the other county golf courses working with other superintendents to learn more about management styles, unique intricacies associated with each course and course layouts.* May be temporarily assigned the duties of the Golf Course Superintendent in his/her absence.* Performs other related duties as required/assigned.**EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS*** Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in turf management or related field.* Five (5) years of related work experience OR any equivalent combination of experience, education and training that displays the ability to do the work.* Must have a golf course and aquatic certification of the WSDA Pesticide License at time of hire or must obtain certification within 12 months of hire date and maintain throughout term of employment.* Possession of a First Aid/CPR/AED certification.* Possession of a valid Washington Driver's License at time of hire and for the duration of employment.**KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES*** Knowledge of landscape maintenance and tree, shrub, and flower arrangements.* Knowledge of golf course maintenance practices, including grounds keeping, horticultural practices and irrigation.* Knowledge of standard tools, equipment and materials used in golf course maintenance work.* Knowledge of the game and rules of golf as adopted by the U.S.G.A. as they specifically relate to maintenance practices.* Knowledge of high volume and high pressure irrigation pump stations.* Knowledge of computer operated irrigation systems including valve in head sprinklers, and wireless operations of complex software programs.* Knowledge of how golf course maintenance practices affect (enhance/hinder) playing the game of golf.* Skilled in communicating effectively both orally and in writing, sufficient to exchange or convey information and to give and receive work direction.* Skilled in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, and customers.* Ability to work independently and formulate specific procedures from more general instructions to effectively coordinate and assign work.* Ability to train employees in safety procedures and internal procedures.* Ability to schedule and supervise employees.* Ability to effectively communicate with the public, consistently delivering positive, courteous and professional service in all interactions.* Ability to safely operate specialized golf course equipment around the golfing public and adjacent homeowners to maintain putting greens, water hazards, bunkers and tees.* Ability to operate heavy equipment as needed.* Ability to perform minor electrical installation and repair work of satellite irrigation boxes and irrigation systems.* Ability to work independently and assume the duties of the Superintendent in his/her absence.* Ability to maintain regular attendance.* Ability to work early mornings, weekends and varied start times.* Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions involving dust, pollen, rain and snow.**BEHAVIORAL STANDARDS**All County employees are responsible for contributing to a safe and positive work environment, actively demonstrating the County values in their daily work and interactions:* Respect:
