Our Indirect Tax practices navigate the complexities of state and local taxes, which often constitute a company’s largest tax burden and are on the rise globally. Our approach helps businesses understand their tax liabilities, identify risks and opportunities, and align with their broader tax strategy.

Your Key Responsibilities The California Controversy Group focuses on consulting and controversy for California income/franchise and sales/use tax matters. This entails, among other things, representing clients at audit, protest, or appeal before one of the California state tax agencies. As a Staff 2 within the California Controversy Group, you will be based in the Sacramento, CA office and be expected to quickly build your tax knowledge and apply it to a range of complex California income/franchise tax issues.

Skills and Attributes for Success To qualify for the role, you must have

A Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree or a Master of Laws (L.L.M) in Tax, supported by a strong academic record.

Certification as a member of the Institute for Professionals in Taxation or the ability to sit for a state bar.

The ability and willingness to travel and work in excess of standard hours when necessary.

Access to reliable transportation to/from the EY office and client sites. A driver’s license is strongly recommended.

You must either reside in or be within a commutable distance to Sacramento, CA.

Ideally, you will have

Professional knowledge or coursework in state and local tax.

The ability to analyze current and evolving tax law to provide meaningful tax insights to clients.

Technical writing and research experience in a tax context.

Strong teaming skills and feel comfortable acting both as a leader and as one that takes direction from others.

Strong organization skills that allow you to juggle multiple projects.

Knowledge of how to leverage firm‑approved AI tools in a business setting, including Microsoft Copilot.

What We Offer You

A comprehensive compensation and benefits package. The base salary range for this role in all US geographic locations is $95,000 – $100,000. Individual salaries are determined by education, experience, knowledge, skills and geography. The Total Rewards package includes medical and dental coverage, pension and 401(k) plans, and a wide range of paid time off options.

A hybrid model with an expectation that most client‑serving roles will work in person 40‑60% of the time over the course of an engagement.
