Summary THIS IS A NATIONAL GUARD TITLE 32 EXCEPTED SERVICE POSITION. This National Guard position is for a Public Affairs Specialist, Position Description Number D2383000 and is part of the 158th Fighter Wing Command of the Vermont Air National Guard. Overview Open & closing dates: 01/02/2026 to 01/12/2026 Salary: $62,359 to – $81,065 per year (GS 9) Location: South Burlington, VT (1 vacancy) No remote or telework. Travel: occasional travel expected. Appointment: Temporary – Indefinite Tenure, not to exceed 09/30/2026. Work schedule: Full-time. Service: Excepted. Eligibility This position is open to current Vermont National Guard members, those who want to join, or transitioning military members, including Title 32 and Title 5 personnel. Responsibilities Prepare and distribute public affairs products through social media, DVIDS, wing website, and civilian media; research, write, and edit stories, articles, and other materials; shoot related photos and video; design and edit visual content; plan and conduct community engagement activities; maintain an active web/social media presence; coordinate news media coverage; and evaluate feedback to improve output. Manage electronic and web‑based information products, implement the Hometown News Release program, write news releases, feature articles, speeches, fact sheets, and brochures; update mission briefings; liaise with program specialists; and ensure security reviews of public web content. Organize, coordinate, and publicize events with local organizations, city councils, businesses, and government offices; support larger events such as Civic Leader Tours, Base Open‑House activities, and Armed Forces Days; manage press kits, handouts, and event logistics; and provide speech materials for wing personnel. Respond to media queries regarding special events, mobilizations, exercises, accidents, or incidents; clear responses with appropriate authority before release. Qualifications Knowledge of public affairs concepts, principles, practices, and techniques, including internal, social media, community, and media relations. Knowledge of mass communication media principles and methods, and skill in developing news stories, feature articles, and layouts. Skill in using DSLR cameras for static and video, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premiere, and MS Office. Skill in evaluating news value or communication potential of visual material and writing/editing news and feature articles. Skill in public relations, interpersonal and mass communication for building relationships with individuals and organizations. Knowledge of written and oral communication principles and ability to analyze and improve information delivery. Conditions of Employment Males born after 31 December 1959 must be registered for Selective Service. Federal employment suitability as determined by a background investigation. Participation in direct deposit is mandatory. Must be a current member of the Vermont Air National Guard. Must obtain and maintain the appropriate security clearance.
