University Baptist Church is seeking a part-time church organist/choir director to fill a staff position at our historic church across from the Johns Hopkins University campus. The choir performs a variety of music during the service, ranging from the classical repertoire (including excerpts from masses and requiems sung in Latin), spirituals, and contemporary anthems. Responsibilities
Provide music for one service every Sunday morning 9:15am-10:30am, including prelude, postlude, anthems, hymns
Direct choir (paid octet and volunteers) during the service and rehearsal (Sunday following the service, from 10:30-11:30am)
Provide music for extra services, including Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, and Good Friday
Plan and direct Christmas and Lenten choir concerts, as part of regular church service
Be available for weddings and funerals in the church
Oversee the maintenance of the church organ (1967 M. P. Moller pipe organ – 55 ranks, 3 manuals) and pianos (including two Steinway & Sons); arrange for tuning and repairs as needed
Schedule and Compensation
Choir sings from the Sunday after Labor Day through the last Sunday in May; solos/duets are scheduled through the summer
Salary range: Part Time $25,000 - $35,000, based on 52 weeks with 4 weeks paid vacation, and is dependent on qualifications and commensurate with the job.
Responsible for finding a competent replacement for summer vacation and any Sunday conflicts.
Qualifications and Skills
Previous experience as a Church organist or in a similar role, with preference for ability to conduct the choir
Excellent musical skills, including sight reading and open-score reading
Proficient in a wide variety of musical styles, especially as appropriate for worship
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Good organizational skills to plan music calendar, coordinate with musicians, work with pastoral staff, maintain the music library
