About the Role The Director of Academic Resources and Learning Innovation provides comprehensive leadership for two essential instructional and academic support units: the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) and the Library & Learning Commons, including the Hay Library, Testing Center, and Peer Tutoring/Writing Center. This position serves as Western's primary leader for institutional teaching excellence, faculty development, instructional innovation, library services, and student learning support.
The Director oversees all staff in both functional areas and reports directly to the Vice President of Academic Affairs. The role requires high‑level strategic planning, strong technical competency, and exceptional interpersonal skills to support two distinct but interconnected missions:
Center for Teaching & Learning – advancing instructional design, teaching quality, LMS digital accessibility, professional development, and educational technology integration.
Library & Learning Commons – advancing academic resource management, information literacy, tutoring, testing services, and student learning support.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities Unified Leadership
– Provide unified leadership for all CTL and Library & Learning Commons programs, personnel, services, and resources.
Strategic Planning & Continuous Improvement
– Lead strategic planning and continuous improvement efforts for teaching, learning, and academic support services.
Advisory Role
– Serve as the primary advisor to the VPAA regarding faculty development, instructional technology, LMS accessibility, academic support, and resource needs.
Accreditation & Compliance
– Ensure alignment with assigned HLC accreditation expectations, federal requirements (including ADA/Section 504/508 as it pertains to instructional materials), and Western strategic priorities.
Committee Representation
– Represent Academic Resources and Learning Innovation on institutional committees and appropriate statewide groups (including WyDEC).
Reporting
– Prepare annual reports, strategic updates, and analyses for the VPAA, President's Cabinet (as requested), and Board of Trustees (as requested).
Center for Teaching & Learning Leadership
Develop and implement comprehensive faculty professional development programs supporting online, hybrid, and face‑to‑face instruction.
Oversee faculty badging pathways that recognize skill development in instructional design, teaching excellence, digital pedagogy, and educational technology.
Provide leadership in instructional design, effective teaching practices, and the use of evidence‑based pedagogy.
Support faculty through consultations, course reviews, design assistance, and strategic integration of new technologies.
Coordinate new faculty onboarding and ongoing training in collaboration with School Deans.
Serve as the institution's subject matter expert on Section 508 digital accessibility as it applies to instruction, course materials, and LMS content.
Ensure faculty training includes accessibility compliance and universal design for learning.
Collaborate with IT to align educational technologies with instructional needs and support faculty adoption.
Collaborate with the Compliance Coordinator to ensure digital accessibility compliance.
Maintain the Faculty Resource website and other digital assets supporting instructional innovation.
Lead signature teaching excellence initiatives such as faculty learning communities.
Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement in teaching across all disciplines.
Library & Learning Commons Leadership
Provide administrative leadership for the Hay Library, including staff supervision, resource management, budgeting, and operations.
Oversee physical and digital collections, ensuring alignment with curricular needs and state consortium agreements.
Collaborate with faculty to select and evaluate library resources supporting academic programs.
Maintain digital databases, electronic collections, and library websites in partnership with IT and external vendors.
Lead information literacy instruction and student academic programming.
Promote student engagement with library resources; physical, electronic, and virtual.
Ensure equitable access to academic resources for on‑campus, outreach, and distance learners.
Supervise the Testing Center and Peer Tutoring/Writing Center, ensuring high‑quality, accessible, and compliant services.
Ensure secure and efficient testing practices, including proctoring, accommodations, and scheduling.
Oversee tutor selection, training, and evaluation aligned with national best practices.
Coordinate academic support efforts with Student Services and academic leadership.
Collaboration, Outreach, and Innovation
Foster a collaborative environment across academic schools, IT, student services, and institutional effectiveness.
Promote the CTL and Learning Commons as hubs of creativity, professional growth, and student success.
Advocate for academic support needs through presentations, workshops, and communication with campus and community stakeholders.
Represent Western in state and national organizations related to academic resources, instructional innovation, and learning support.
Other Duties
Manage budgets and expenditures for all supervised units.
Maintain records, inventories, and reports as required.
Participate in institutional assessment and strategic planning.
Maintain safe and inclusive working conditions.
Stay current with national trends, research, and innovations in teaching, learning, library sciences, and academic technology.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Master's degree from a regionally accredited institution.
Three (3) – Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in higher education, including leadership in at least one of the following: teaching and learning, faculty development, library services, instructional design, or academic support.
Demonstrated knowledge of instructional technology, online education systems (e.g., Canvas), and educational resource platforms.
Experience with library consortium systems, database management, or information literacy instruction.
Demonstrated skill in Section 508 digital accessibility and universal design for learning.
Experience supervising professional staff and managing budgets.
Strong leadership, communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
Ability to collaborate effectively across divisions and stakeholder groups.
Preferred Qualifications
Demonstrated strategic leadership experience in directing complex academic support units, instructional innovation initiatives, or cross‑functional teams within higher education.
Experience supervising multiple professional teams across different functional units.
Prior administrative experience in a community college or open‑access institution.
Experience managing library system migrations, database licensing, or statewide consortium participation.
Record of successful grant writing or project management, particularly in projects involving teaching innovation, academic support, or educational technology.
Active participation and leadership roles in professional organizations related to teaching and learning, academic libraries, instructional design, or student support services.
Successful experience leading institution‑wide teaching and learning initiatives, including faculty learning communities, quality improvement projects, or pedagogy redesign efforts.
Experience with event management, public speaking, and marketing.
