General Summary:
The Summer Aquatic Director is responsible for the overall operation, safety, and supervision of the municipality’s aquatic facilities during the summer season. This position oversees aquatic staff, ensures compliance with all safety and health regulations, and provides high-quality aquatic programs and customer service to the community.
Essential Job Functions Aquatic Operations
Manage daily operations of municipal swimming pools by enforcing aquatic safety rules, policies, and emergency procedures. Develop and maintain schedules for open swim, lessons, lap swim, and special events (non-season planning hours will occur). Serve as on-site supervisor during assigned hours.
Staff Supervision
Recruit, hire, train, schedule, and supervise lifeguards and aquatic staff. Conduct regular staff meetings, in-service trainings, and safety drills. Monitor performance, address conduct issues in accordance with municipal policies, and ensure all staff certifications remain current, including re-certification as needed.
Safety and Risk Management
Respond to emergencies, patron incidents, and staff concerns. Complete accident and incident reports accurately and on time. Coordinate with emergency services as needed and ensure proper lifeguard coverage and adherence to rescue and surveillance standards.
Programming and Public Relations
Oversee swim lessons and aquatic programs. Respond to resident inquiries, complaints, and feedback professionally. Maintain a safe, welcoming, and inclusive pool environment and enforce pool rules consistently and fairly.
Administrative Responsibilities
Prepare weekly staff schedules and approve timesheets. Maintain accurate records including certifications, attendance, and incident logs. Assist with purchasing supplies and inventory control.
Facility Oversight
Assist with monitoring water quality, including testing and documentation. Report facility, equipment, and maintenance issues promptly. Assist with seasonal pool opening and closing procedures.
Current Lifeguard Certification (American Red Cross or equivalent)
CPR/AED and First Aid certification
Previous experience in aquatic operations and staff supervision
Strong leadership, communication, and decision‑making skills
Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor and Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certifications, preferred.
Experience working in a municipal or public recreation setting, preferred.
Physical Requirements
Ability to perform lifeguard rescues and emergency response
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
