Mission Assurance Director for Whiteshell, BWXT's Technical Services Group - CNL Project BWXT’s Technical Services Group (TSG) manages and conducts high-consequence operations within government-owned facilities that require uncompromising discipline. This position supports the BWXT-led Nuclear Laboratory Partners of Canada (NLPC) contract, overseeing Whiteshell Laboratories (WL) operations for Canadian National Laboratories.
Job Qualifications/Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in engineering, business, or a relevant discipline required; an advanced degree preferred.
Minimum 15 years of relevant experience.
Understanding of issues management programs including event investigation and resolution, developing SMARTER corrective actions, facilitating efficient management review of root causes and corrective action plans, and evaluating the effectiveness of completed corrective actions.
Understanding of data analysis including reliability and trending; establishing effective key performance indicators, performance objectives, measures, and commitments; and developing reports and dashboards that represent performance compared to objectives.
Experience leading root cause analyses, facilitating management review meetings, and preparing performance monitoring reports is considered an asset.
Familiarity with nuclear/chemical facility or research laboratory operations is preferred.
Familiarity with Canadian nuclear regulatory frameworks (e.g., CNSC) strongly preferred.
Must be eligible to obtain and maintain Canadian security clearance.
Must reside near or be willing to relocate to the Whiteshell site located in Pinawa, Manitoba, Canada.
Job Description/Duties
Reporting directly to the corporate Performance Assurance function and matrixed to the VP, Whiteshell Restoration Project, the Mission Assurance Director for Whiteshell provides leadership and day-to-day oversight to the Performance Assurance functional support area at Whiteshell Laboratories.
Ensure implementation of the Issues Management Program at Whiteshell Laboratories meeting CNL corporate and regulatory requirements.
Implement refined SMARTER corrective actions and Issues Management procedures/processes, setting issue resolution expectations and in collaboration with the corporate Manager, Issues Management develop performance indicators.
Facilitate management reviews of issues, corrective actions, and safety performance and resolve associated internal and external comments or questions.
Support, advise, and coach ImpAct Coordinator(s) at Whiteshell Laboratories with determining event causes, developing SMARTER corrective actions, and fact-finding investigations. Strengthen the ImpAct Coordinator tools, skillsets, and interfaces through routine information sharing sessions and mentoring.
Coordinate with the Manager, Performance Analysis in developing Key Performance Indicators, leading indicators, periodic reports, management presentations, dashboards, etc.
Support the consistent implementation of Performance Analysis procedures/processes, in depth analysis of performance trends, and integrated reports that provide the full context of issues at Whiteshell Laboratories.
Assure data quality, reliability, and traceability for Whiteshell Laboratories datasets and reports. Identify when additional data is needed to provide a more complete picture of performance and develop efficient means to collect this additional data.
Analyze performance indicator data from several different perspectives to identify potential emerging trends. When potential trends are identified, collect line management’s insight on the potential trend and seek out complementary data (e.g., self and independent assessment findings, management field observations) to develop a more comprehensive understanding of performance. Anticipate need for additional management oversight, compensatory measures, or corrective actions when leading indicator data reveals potential adverse trends in performance or increased risk of incidents or events.
Translate Issues Management and Performance Analysis results into clear, concise, and actionable formats that provide enough data and feedback on performance such that Executive Leadership can identify when action is warranted. Solicit feedback from business lines, Executive Leadership, Board of Directors, and AECL to ensure the reporting products are satisfying their needs.
Collect, organize, monitor, and distribute information related to Whiteshell performance indicators, operating experience, and lessons learned such that the workforce can understand and continuously improve CNL performance.
Responsible to improve processes including driving initiatives to enhance operational efficiency, productivity, and innovation.
Contributes to strategic planning aimed at accelerating results and removing operational barriers.
Identifies and mitigates operational risks and p romotes risk-aware decision-making and early implementation of mitigation strategies.
Responsible to report instances of non-compliance and results of investigation and the corrective actions undertaken.
Maintains clear, effective communications between Whiteshell Laboratories and the broader CNL teams.
Ensures adequate staff, resources, and budget are available to implement, maintain and effectively perform Performance Assurance at Whiteshell Laboratories.
Facilitates the assessment planning and execution of assessments at Whiteshell Laboratories.
Leads, mentors, and coaches team members including providing leadership and guidance to the Performance Assurance functional area.
Responsible to ensure compliance including overseeing organizational compliance with company policies, organizational safety standards, functional area procedures, prevailing Canadian regulations, and other contractual obligations and legal requirements.
Performs additional duties as assigned.

The base salary range for this position in South Carolina (US-SC) at the start of employment is expected to be between $161,000 USD and $233,000 USD per year. However, the base salary offered is based on local job market factors and may vary further depending on factors specific to the selected job candidate, such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided at such time the selected job candidate receives an offer of employment.
