POSITION SUMMARY Under the supervision of the Associate Vice President of Healthy Living and in cooperation with YMCA staff, the Association Director of Wellness Experience provides strategic leadership and oversight for the YMCA of the Triangle’s personal training, small group training, group fitness, and fitness floor experience. This role ensures alignment with the YMCA mission and vision by developing innovative, high-quality, and engaging wellness experiences that foster belonging, improve health outcomes, and strengthen member retention. The Director collaborates with branch leadership to create consistent standards, drive innovation, and support staff development, while ensuring that wellness programs remain inclusive, financially sustainable, and impactful.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Strategic Leadership & Vision

In collaboration with the Associate Vice President of Healthy Living, design and implement a strategic development of a comprehensive association-wide wellness experience that integrates personal training, small group training, group fitness, and fitness floor operations.

Monitor industry trends and use data-driven decision making to adapt, innovate, and maintain the YMCA as a leader in health and wellness.

Build collaborations across branches to ensure consistent standards, member engagement strategies, and integration of wellness programming.

Program Development & Oversight

Lead the development and growth of the personal training and small group training programs, driving and achieving revenue and retention goals as set by the strategic plan.

Oversee the design, delivery, and evaluation of all wellness programs, ensuring offerings are relevant, inclusive, and results‑driven.

Develop and implement onboarding systems for members engaging in personal training, small group training, and group fitness.

Partner with Healthy Living Directors and Association Community Health Coordinator to support evidence-based program growth, evaluate environments, and enhance wellness facilitiesequipment, studios, sound, lighting, and member touchpoints).

Maximize the utilization and productivity of fitness technology that supports wellness programs to include, but not limited to, Evolt, Myzone, and the Y Member App.

Lead association-level program launches, quality assurance initiatives, and curriculum updates.

Staff Leadership & Development

Provides leadership and support to Associate Executive Directors and branch Healthy Living staff.

Lead the Group Fitness & Wellness IQ Team in collaboration with the Associate Vice President of Healthy Living and IQ Team Leaders.

Assist branch leadership with recruitment, training, and mentoring of instructors, trainers, and wellness staff across the association, emphasizing diversity, inclusion, and excellence.

Implement a robust feedback and evaluation system for staff performance and program quality across all wellness programs.

Model a healthy, holistic lifestyle and coach staff to be role models of the YMCA’s values.

Member Engagement & Community Impact

Ensure welcoming, safe, and engaging wellness environments that foster connection, motivation, and retention.

Develop strategies that connect members with small wellness communities to deepen relationships and accountability.

Build and maintain community partnerships to extend the YMCA’s impact on health and wellness and assist with the recruitment and development of the Y staff team.

Represent the YMCA with professionalism, cultivating strong relationships with community organizations, businesses, and stakeholders.

Financial & Operational Management

Provide suggestions and guidance for the Group Fitness and Wellness budget guidelines in collaboration with the Associate Vice President of Healthy Living.

Establish and track performance metrics for revenue, member engagement, and program participation.

Monitor and support operational software systems that support wellness program operations – scheduling software, reservations, management systems, PowerBI

Ensure compliance with YMCA policies, risk management standards, and operational excellence.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Health Promotion, or related field preferred.

5-7 years of progressive leadership experience in fitness, wellness, or health promotion, preferably within a multi-site or association model.

National certification in personal training and group fitness required.

CPR, AED, First Aid, and Basic Life Support certifications (or ability to obtain within 30 days).

Demonstrated success in leading teams, creating and delivering fitness or wellness education, and driving member engagement programs.

Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills with proven ability to coach and inspire staff.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office and experience with data management tools (e.g., PowerBI).

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Ability to obtain upon hire certifications in Basic Life Support, Basic First Aid, Emergency Oxygen and Emergency Medication Administration Training. All certifications must stay current while employed with the YMCA.

Travel, including overnight, may be necessary.

Must be able to provide valid identification for employment eligibility verification.

Must possess a valid driver’s license and have access to reliable transportation.

A clean driving record is required to meet YMCA insurance standards.

Travel between branch locations or to off-site meetings and events is required.

WORKING CONDITIONS This position is 100% in person, with the flexibility to work at various branches and program locations across the YMCA of the Triangle as needed. Designations are determined based on the needs of the YMCA of the Triangle and may be modified at the organization’s discretion.
