Position Summary The Director of Development serves as the #2 leader within the Resource Development Department and plays a critical role in advancing the organization’s fundraising strategy, donor stewardship, and operational excellence. This position is responsible for managing mid-level donor relationships, executing key annual fundraising campaigns, overseeing monthly giving and peer-to-peer initiatives, and ensuring accurate grant reporting and fundraising data management.

Reporting directly to the Chief Development Officer (CDO), the Director of Development provides leadership to staff, supports department planning and reporting, and helps translate strategy into execution while maintaining strong donor experiences and internal systems. The RD Assistant and Marketing & Communications Coordinator will be managed by this position.

Primary Responsibilities Mid-Level Donor Management & Stewardship

Manage and grow a portfolio of mid-level donors, including annual giving supporters and recurring donors.

Develop and implement stewardship strategies to increase donor retention, upgrades, and engagement.

Coordinate personalized touches including acknowledgments, impact updates, calls, meetings, and event invitations.

Track donor activity, interactions, and moves management within Bloomerang.

Campaign Management Lead and execute the following fundraising campaigns in collaboration with the CDO and marketing staff:

Peer-to-Peer Campaigns

Summer Appeal

Year-End Giving Campaign

Monthly Donor Program

Responsibilities include:

Campaign planning, timelines, and execution

Coordination of messaging, appeals, and donor segmentation

Collaboration with marketing to develop campaign materials

Tracking performance metrics and reporting results

Post-campaign analysis and recommendations for improvement

Monthly Donor Program

Oversee strategy, growth, retention, and stewardship of the monthly donor program.

Identify opportunities to convert one-time donors to recurring supporters.

Develop monthly donor communications and recognition strategies.

Monitor trends and provide monthly performance reports.

Grant Reporting, Tracking & Small Grant Prospecting

Manage all grant reporting and tracking within Bloomerang, ensuring compliance with funder requirements and deadlines.

Coordinate with finance, programs, and operations to collect required grant metrics and narratives.

Maintain accurate grant records, reporting calendars, and documentation.

Conduct small grant prospecting and assist with tracking opportunities.

Support the grant writing team as needed with data, reporting, and funder stewardship.

Systems, Data & Technology Management

Serve as department lead for Bloomerang data integrity, reporting, and task management.

Manage and optimize Vee.com for donor communications, automation, and workflow efficiencies.

Ensure accurate gift entry, acknowledgments, and reporting in collaboration with the RD Assistant.

Produce monthly fundraising dashboards and reports for leadership and board review.

Staff Leadership & Supervision

Supervise and support the Part-Time Resource Development Assistant and Part-Time Marketing & Communications Coordinator.

Provide clear direction, priorities, and accountability for assigned projects.

Support professional development, training, and performance management.

Ensure consistent donor communications, timely acknowledgments, and coordinated marketing efforts.

Leadership & Department Support (CDO #2 Role)

Serve as a thought partner to the Chief Development Officer on strategy, planning, and execution.

Assist with annual fundraising planning, goal setting, and budget tracking.

Support board and committee engagement related to annual giving and campaigns.

Represent the Resource Development department in internal meetings as needed.

Step in to manage day-to-day RD operations in the CDO’s absence.

Identify process improvements, efficiencies, and best practices to strengthen the department.

Uphold and model a strong culture of donor-centered fundraising and collaboration.

Qualifications & Experience

Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree or CFRE preferred.

Minimum of 5+ years of nonprofit fundraising experience, with demonstrated success in annual giving and donor stewardship.

Experience managing mid-level donor portfolios and fundraising campaigns.

Strong working knowledge of fundraising CRMs (Bloomerang preferred).

Experience with donor communications platforms and automation tools (Vee.com or similar).

Supervisory experience is strongly preferred.

Strong project management, organizational, and communication skills.

Ability to analyze data, track progress, and present results clearly.

High level of professionalism, discretion, and relationship-building ability.
