About the Role
The Company is seeking a Director of Legal Services/General Counsel to join their team. The successful candidate will be a seasoned legal professional with a strong background in local government law, compliance, and regulatory matters. This role requires the ability to manage a wide range of complex legal issues, including overseeing relationships with external legal counsel and ensuring that legal matters are handled efficiently and cost-effectively. The ideal candidate will be a collaborative leader, capable of engaging with an executive team and Board of Directors, and will have a full breadth of legal knowledge across water, wastewater, and solid waste operations.
Applicants for the Director of Legal Services/General Counsel position at the company must be licensed to practice law in Texas or have the ability to obtain a Texas State Bar within three months of hire. A Doctor of Jurisprudence (JD) from an accredited law school and a minimum of 15 years of legal experience, with at least 5 years in Texas local government law, are required. The role also demands experience in managing outside counsel and legal budgets, as well as a proven track record of collaboration with executive teams and governing boards. Preferred qualifications include experience in negotiating legal fees, managing budgets, and direct experience advising a water district, municipal utility, or city council. The candidate should be an intelligent, politically astute, and emotionally intelligent leader, capable of developing legal processes and training programs.
