Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialist – RN
UAMS – University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences is hiring a Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialist – RN to join the FIN | CORE CDI Clinical Doc Team.
Job Summary
Improve overall quality and completeness of clinical documentation to accurately reflect patient severity of illness, clinical needs, and utilization of resources.
Review death medical records to ensure severity of illness and risk of mortality are captured at the highest level.
Work with providers to capture clinical care in code format for reimbursement and ensure correct case mix.
Review all admission types and educate providers on admission types.
Responsibilities
Apply extensive clinical knowledge to read and analyze health record documentation, identifying significant diagnoses, treatments, and procedures; assign non-indexed terms to ICD‑10 classification system.
Review death medical records and use Vizient calculator to verify risk of mortality and severity of illness scores.
Interact directly with physicians, nursing staff, and other healthcare team members to clarify documentation and transfer knowledge related to accurate documentation, coding, and reimbursement practices.
Develop and facilitate education on clinical documentation improvement, coding guidelines, and regulatory requirements through one‑on‑one and group presentations.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
Registered Nurse (RN) with current license and four years inpatient clinical experience in Emergency, Critical Care, or Medical/Surgical area with experience in Quality, Case Management, Clinical Audit, or Data Abstraction OR Coding professional with CCS certification and six years inpatient coding experience with documented education in anatomy/physiology and pharmacology.
Preferred Qualifications:
Current CCDS.

Salary: Commensurate with education and experience.
