# **Job Description Summary**Organization's Summary Statement: The mission of the Institute is to pursue interdisciplinary research and education at the University as well as provide support for theoretical and experimental research in areas at the intersection of traditional disciplines. The current research interests are in the areas of Non-equilibrium Systems, Emergent Materials and Active Matter; Networks Science and Dynamical Systems; Quantitative Life Sciences; Energetic Particle Astrophysics & Space Technology; and Applied Mathematics & Scientific Computation. With over three dozen faculty members in IPST, most hold joint appointments with academic units in the College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences, and Engineering. Several faculty are members of the National Academy of Science and the National Academy of Engineering. The Institute is home to numerous University interdisciplinary graduate programs offering M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Applied Mathematics and Scientific Computation, Biophysics, Chemical Physics, and Quantum Computing. More information can be found at The IPST Director will report to the Dean of the College. Minimum Qualifications: PhD required. The successful candidate will be a tenured full professor at the University of Maryland, College Park. Tenured associate professors may apply if they are expected to be a full professor by July 1, 2026. The position begins on July 1, 2026. The appointee shall have established a national and, where appropriate, international reputation for outstanding research, scholarship or artistic creativity, and a distinguished record of teaching. There also must be a record of continuing evidence of relevant and effective professional service. We are seeking candidates with outstanding records in research and education, along with administrative skills and vision to lead the unit. The candidate should have a strong commitment to faculty and student development; be a scientist of the highest quality in any of the current research areas or in an adjacent research area. Physical Demands: This is an office position that will require the person to travel among different buildings at the university for meetings and other activities. Work hours are usually during the day, however, occasional evening and weekend hours may be required for college events such as commencement.
