Washington Wilkes Chamber of Commerce Executive Director

The Washington‑Wilkes Chamber of Commerce is a 501(c)(6) non‑profit that serves business members, individual members, non‑profit partners, and the residents and visitors of Wilkes County. Our mission is to advance local business and promote the economic well‑being of the community through tourism, events, education, and collaboration with elected leadership. The Chamber also manages the Washington‑Wilkes Tourism and Welcome Center and provides promotional support for major non‑chamber events.

The Executive Director develops and oversees programs that align with the Chamber’s mission and objectives, works directly with the Board of Directors to set short‑ and long‑term goals, and leads the full‑time, exempt position with weekend and evening work required. The role requires regular travel within and adjacent to Wilkes County, occasional travel outside the area for conferences and special meetings, a valid driver’s license, and reliable transportation. Salary range: $30,000‑$35,000.

Experience & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and/or demonstrated experience in leadership roles, including at least five years of supervisory experience.
  • Experience in organizing and marketing community events.
  • Experience working with diverse groups and varied industries to promote inclusive growth.
  • Strong written communication, public speaking, and presentation skills.
  • Experience managing business finances and budgets.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, QuickBooks, Canva, and social media platforms.
  • Excellent organization, time‑management, tasking, and email management skills.

Membership Responsibilities

  • Well versed in membership and sponsorship benefits to showcase Chamber value.
  • Recruit prospective members, grow membership, and maintain high retention rates with Economic Development, City of Washington, and Chamber Board.
  • Develop and execute membership expansion strategies and an annual membership drive in collaboration with the Board.
  • Welcome new Chamber members, conduct ribbon‑cutting ceremonies, and attend grand openings.
  • Coordinate Chamber member events and activities providing professional development and networking opportunities.
  • Host the Chamber’s monthly Business Power Hour.
  • Keep informed of local, state, and federal funding options, grant opportunities, and other programs relating to business and advocacy of Chamber member businesses.
  • Create and update members’ welcome packages and benefits packages.

Events

  • Produce and sponsor a few community and fundraising events throughout the year; responsible for planning, organizing, staffing, and budgeting.
  • Design, promote, and solicit sponsorship packages for Chamber events.

Community Relations

  • Chief spokesperson for the Washington‑Wilkes Chamber and Welcome Center.
  • Develop and foster close working relationships with key community stakeholders, including City Council, County Commissioners, Downtown Development Authority, and value local level representation.
  • Attend and represent the Chamber at City Council, County Commissioner, PDA, and DDA meetings and other community and government meetings as necessary.

Marketing

  • Oversee all Chamber and Tourism marketing efforts including social media pages and website.
  • Direct marketing agency in promoting tourism to the area.
  • Design and supervise the creation of collateral materials needed to advertise events, membership, and other Chamber and Tourism activities.

Administrative

  • Lead day‑to‑day operations of the organization.
  • Prepare and oversee the annual budgets for Chamber and Tourism.
  • Negotiate and approve contracts for vendors, office equipment, insurance policies, marketing partnerships, banking agreements, etc.
  • Maintain all vital records and assets of the Chamber and Tourism.
  • Review Chamber’s financial expenditures on a monthly basis with Board Treasurer.
  • Work with Board President to create board’s monthly meeting agendas.
  • Provide Director’s Report and Membership update for monthly Board meetings.
  • Update Tourism’s budget for monthly Board meetings.
  • Perform routine tasks typical in an office setting such as using computers, phones, and copiers.
  • Prepare and submit annual Tourism, Convention and Trade Show report to GA Department of Community Affairs.

Other Responsibilities

  • Attend Chamber‑related conferences, workshops, seminars as needed for personal growth and networking.
  • Attend tourism‑related conferences, workshops, seminars as needed.
  • Bring concerns and questions to the attention of the Chamber Board.
