McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston seeks an experienced transplant hepatologist to serve as Medical Director of Liver Transplantation in the Transplant Institute at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center. This position is a full-time (1.0 FTE), non-tenure clinical track, open-rank position within the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology, Section of Hepatology.
Position Key Accountabilities:
The position requires providing inpatient and outpatient care at the Abdominal Transplant Center within the Memorial Hermann Transplant Institute, as well as instructing students, residents, and fellows at the McGovern Medical School. Additionally, participation is required in research related to hepatology and liver transplantation.
The roles and responsibilities include the following:

  • Providing leadership and oversight for the adult liver transplant program, ensuring quality and growth.
  • Collaborating with the Director of Abdominal Transplantation and other interprofessional partners to provide comprehensive patient-centered care.
  • Performing inpatient and outpatient clinical care for liver transplant candidates and recipients within the Memorial Hermann Transplant Institute.
  • Providing non-transplant hepatology care, including the management of chronic liver diseases (e.g., hepatitis B/C, NAFLD/NASH, autoimmune liver disease, and alcohol-associated liver disease, complications of cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma), and performing related procedures such as paracentesis and liver biopsy.
  • Collaborating with an interprofessional team to provide comprehensive, patient-centered care.
  • Educating interdisciplinary learners.
  • Supporting current training programs as well as the development of advanced training programs (i.e., transplant hepatology fellowship).
  • Promoting the research mission of the department and university by:
    • providing access to patients, biological specimens, and clinical data for ongoing studies and/or
    • pursuing basic science or clinical research either as a principal investigator or as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
    • Engaging as a member of transplant-related committees, such as Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI), transplant evaluation, and patient selection (i.e., Medical Review Board (MRB).
    • Participating in divisional and departmental activities, such as faculty meetings and conferences.
    • Promoting a culture of safety by adhering to evidence-based practices, advocating for patient-centered care, and fostering open communication.
    • Adhering to regulatory standards such as those set forth by CMS, OPTN, and the Joint Commission.
    Qualifications:
    • MD, DO, or equivalent degree from an accredited institution.
    • Completion of an accredited transplant nephrology fellowship.
    • Applicants should have at least five years of post-training clinical practice.
    • Board certification or eligibility.
    • Possession of a Texas Medical License before the appointment start date.
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
    • Commitment to academic medicine.
